Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

They're on the downside of their window.

They're better than what they've shown this seaso but their cap structure will have them in retool mode sooner than later.

They have definately been a frustrating team to watch this season. They do not look like an elite team at all.

Their play this season so far looks like a team that either had a LONG playoff run and are off to a typical slow start OR a team that is tuning out their head coach.

It's not a secret that this year's team going into the season looked worse than last season but I still assumed they would have been a top team and a treat to watch on TV. I'm just astounded that Dubas didn't significantly upgrade his defense/goalie situation this offseason... Sure Samsonov has played well but Murray trade was obviously atrocious and their defense is even worse than before.

I truly don't know what is gonna happen... I would assume something should happen to Dubas and/or Keefe any time now but then again it seems like Dubas has 9 lives and also as long as Dubas is around, Keefe is safe. The Leafs have some of the best players in the game right now and it's frustrating to see that Dubas isn't taking full advantage of this window they have to win

I mean he’s played one game, possibly injured.

You got people saying it’s still early for Campbell who’s played 6x the games.

Murray is definitely a risk, but it’s a risk you got paid to take. Leafs will LTIR him if he sucks, Ottawa was too cheap to do that so they paid the Leafs picks instead.
Lmao, no Ottawa was the smart one to dump him.

Can a guy like Murray with a NTC be waived?

I thought guys on NTCs and NMCs were immune from waivers.
Yes Ottawa waived him last year.

Toronto will probably be a team like Washington. Many years people will pencil them in as easy favourites, and then the year it looks like they can’t possibly do it they’ll just go off and get their cup.

Ironically, I would say that's part of the problem. Between JT/Marner/Matthews/Nylander it seems that 1-2 of them are slumping during any given block of games. The fact that exactly WHO is slumping changes from month to month is what keeps a move from being made IMO. Its been obvious to most that at least one of those 4 needed to be moved but since they're all streaky its hard to nail down exactly which one should be the odd man out. Even if none of the players had trade protection, I don't think Dubas would be able to decide who to trade.

This summer will be interesting because when Dubas is fired at the end of the season I think the new GM will make his/her mark by shipping one of the 4 out.
Realistically, which of those “big” money four could be traded and return enough to better balance the lineup? I’m thinking Matthews, and no way would I trade him away. The guys in the room need to figure it out. I don’t see help coming from outside.

I still consider this to be the "post pre-season" time of the season. There is usually a ton of movement and odd streaks in the first dozen games of the season or so.

Toronto is still a top team in this league. It would be more concerning if the top scores were lighting it up and the depth was collapsing. We know those top players will get hot.

Why is everyone overreacting?

Fire the coach?
Top players are turds?

The Leafs “at their worst” are still managing a 500 record in the uber-competitive Atlantic Division.

The Ducks and Canucks would love to switch places. At their best, these 2 teams have a combined 2 wins. Count your blessings.

Let’s all calm down. A 5 game win streak and 4 straight hat tricks by pre-pubescent moustache and this board is crowning them the President’s Trophy winner.

We’re 10% into the season.

RELAX.

How many coaches has Dubas hired? I can see how he’s on the hot seat but I wouldn’t think firing Keefe early-mid season would do him in. Many GMs getting plenty more coach hire/fires before they’re canned.

Does anyone know who Dubas would actually be replaced with? Somebody expected to be great, or just ‘somebody else’?

I’ve written this out in multiple threads and I don’t want to write it out in detail again, but Dubas is better than he gets credit for, and likely wouldn’t be on the hot seat in most markets. Replacing somebody just to replace them isn’t a good idea, how many GMs get replaced with somebody arguably worse?
He took over a supposed Stanly cup contender and look at the list of goalies he has hand picked.
Yeah but at some point Toronto fans need to stop blaming other people and start looking in the mirror
Ridiculous

Won't speak for anyone else but I can relax and notice the leafs stink at the same time.

I wouldn't be too worried. It is a LONG season. Think about all those games in January, February, etc. They'll put together some win streaks. I fully expect Matthews to go off at some point and climb the goal scoring leaders very quickly.

Clearly you can’t relax. EVERY TEAM goes on hot and cold streaks. Some shorter, some longer. Some teams take their cold streaks in December. Some take them in October. A cold streak in March counts the same as in November. The NHL season has ebbs and flows.

The Leafs had their cold streak in October this year (if you can even call 500-hockey a cold streak). If they’re hot for the remainder of the year - which is completely possible - who cares?

PERSPECTIVE
If the Leafs go 6-3-1 (6 wins, 4 losses - ”underperforming” but still reasonable)the remainder of the way, they’ll finish:

(48-25-9) for 105 points.

It’s likely they eclipse this by 5-10 points so I don’t even get why everyone in TDot is crying.

RELAX.

Didn’t they start 4-4-1 last season as well? As long as Matthews returns to form (which he will) they should be okay.

I'm not talking about hot streaks ....you are.
I'm talking about the top "teams" . Leafs are not one. Making early season predictions based on my own opinions . This thread is on the Leafs. In my opinion they have regressed.
I don't like their goaltending, I don't like their D and I'm completely unimpressed with their depth up front.
All my own opinion buddy ..... so take your own advice and relax......

Cheers

Every hockey publication and media outlet has them as one of the top 3 favourites to win the cup.

How is this not a “top team”? You’re only reacting the way you are due to their recent play. You’re not putting the whole season into perspective.

So for the last time: RELAX.

Its called my prediction "every hockey publication and media" had them going all the way the year of the North division too ......... but I didnt.

You have your prediction buddy......... I have mine. And its based on rosters. ....... Not only the month of Octobers record.

I can relax. Its Dubas and Keefe who likely cant.
