Toronto Maple Leafs are surprisingly underperforming

One thing I noticed tonight was the Leafs were going for a whole lotta transitional plays on the penalty kill... when the score was 1-1. Prior to the 2-1 goal there were like 3 separate plays where they looked like they were looking for a breakout on the PK when they could've just iced the puck instead. Turned it over every time with the last one resulting in a goal against.

Kings give up SHG like it's going out of style. If they're doing that every night it wouldn't be ideal but i'm sure their prescout was like "yeah attack those idiots lol"

Should have fired Dubas last year

Muzzin might be done with nobody to replace him

too many picks moved for win-now trades that haven't panned out, they have almost no prospects that can fill roles on the bottom pairs and bottom six for ELC/cheap contracts

Top heavy cap, though to be fair, Tavares has played better so far this year.

Reilly taking a giant shit so far this year is hurting way more than it should.

Murray was a terrible trade, if Samsonov emerges as a #1, then he is basically dead cap when he is healthy

Matthews will pick it up, but he's been very meh, hard to play well when your top line is bollocks right now.

depth sucks

They will make the playoffs, but not a lot to be excited about right now. If they are struggling still in December, please fire DUbas before the trade deadline.

Outside of Mathews, Marner, Nylander & Tavares, there isn't a lot behind that group anymore. It's shocking how much depth they've lost at forward over the last few years: Hyman, Mikheyev, Kapanen & Kadri, for instance. Even Spezza was able to add some depth offense. With Matthews & Marner out of sync they don't have the forward depth to cover for that.

The D is crap with Holl playing without Muzzin to cover his ass. No real physicality back there, and way too many turnovers.

D is a big problem right now.

Weird to see a Habs fan sum the situation up perfectly.

Idk if I’m tripping but the loss of Spezza as a player makes me fear them way less. Might be because he was always hot against the Habs though.

He was also a good vibe compared to the brats left on the team.
You're right on the money. Spezza was their best player in the sense that he was the only real 'clutch/money/impact' player on the roster. Not the flashiest, not the highest scoring, but he always seemed to play his best when big games were on the line. He worked hard in the trenches and often delivered while 'the big 4' lived up to the memes and choked hard.

Spezza was the Leafs' Darren McCarty and they will not go anywhere as a team unless they can find another clutch performer.

Ironically, I would say that's part of the problem. Between JT/Marner/Matthews/Nylander it seems that 1-2 of them are slumping during any given block of games. The fact that exactly WHO is slumping changes from month to month is what keeps a move from being made IMO. Its been obvious to most that at least one of those 4 needed to be moved but since they're all streaky its hard to nail down exactly which one should be the odd man out. Even if none of the players had trade protection, I don't think Dubas would be able to decide who to trade.

This summer will be interesting because when Dubas is fired at the end of the season I think the new GM will make his/her mark by shipping one of the 4 out.

If Keefe is gone then Dubas should be gone too.

Keefe was hand-picked by Dubas. Dubas couldn't wait to find any excuse he could find to fire Babcock so that he could bring his buddy Keefe onto the team.

At what point does Dubas take any blame for constructing a roster in which 5 players take 60% of the salary-cap?
SHANAHAN NEEDS TO BE FIRED.

The way you say that, it's like you think us fans should storm the executive offices and sign the paperwork ourselves. We can't do shit.

BTW, our terrible start to the season, our completely pathetic play, all the doom and gloom...and we have a Sens fan (1 fewer pt in 1 fewer gp) and an Oilers fan (1pt up) going to town.

I expected the likes of Bruins and Flames fans to be going off, they look like Cup contenders. But Oilers and Sens fans?
The doom and gloom isnt because you are 4-4, its because of piss poor results against the basement of the league. Im sure you're not that obtuse. Weird that you had no problem chatting junk in the Campbell thread but seem to be up in arms about folk coming here doing the same.

Underperforming? Their division is stronger this season, their roster is worse than last season, and they severely downgraded their goaltending.

Some regression is to be expected

Our goaltending has been very good. We are losing because we can't score a goal to save our life not because of poor goaltending/defense.

but their Defense is amongst they worst

This is just not true whatsoever. D core is very strong. Team bad because they can't score so far.

Other favorites are underperforming too. Colorado is 4-4-1, St. Louis is 3-4, Tampa is 5-4, NYR is 4-3-2.

Came here to say this. All the hot takes this early are premature.
As a die hard Leafs fan myself, it's not premature. They are playing a gutless game and it's so f***ing infuriating. I can handle a loss, I can't handle piss poor effort. Simply put, they just don't give a f*** and it's disgusting to watch as a fan.

I've sat through games when we had Toskala in net, Lebda on defence, Jason Blake as our best player, I turned off the last 3 games less than half way in, sorry i'm not investing my time watching that piss poor effort. I love this team but the effort is so disgustingly bad that it's actually disrespectful to fans and the especially the people that are spending money to watch them live.

are you trying to say the Leafs only had a positive record the past 2 seasons because of Covid?
pretty terrible take
Without the COVID influence the Leafs top at a 95-105 point pace. See the 4 prior seasons pre-COVID.

It is indisputable.

Looks like it was the Leafs and not the Hawks who wanted to fully channel their inner tank for Bedard.

Looking closely at the last couple games, I think the issue has that their top players are turds. Nylander is arguably the best of the bunch now.
