Easy to see why they knew he'd be available at 38. He probably would have been available in the next rround.
Hopefully it works out, sure is an odd pick and makes the Mrazek trade look different too.

I don't consider Mike Stephens to be a source at all but I'm laughing because he said something to the effect of Leafs thinking they can get a top 15 player at 38.

Fraser Minten lol. This is not a good pick, especially with Kyrou still available.
It was very likely Firkus or Chesley. Considering the scouting report on Minten they probably wanted Chesley.

So he just finished his 17 year old season?
6'1", 185 lbs.

Let's hope the scouts got it right.

Welcome to Leafs Nation, where you've been judged, and who are you again?
 perfect

NHL Potential

Minten has the potential to be a solid bottom-six center that also kills penalties. A player that probably will not eclipse 10 goals a season but will be out there late in games when defending a lead. There are still some areas he needs to improve, like his faceoff percentage, but once he does, he should have no problem finding an NHL job.

Can't get excited with another minor league filler .. why we don't draft guys with flat out speed I can't understand .. we needed a C with SPEED and a 2 way game .. and a guy who could play on our 4th line this season .. we got a guy who will need to shift to LW due to his skating .. when JT is about to shift to LW too .. Dubie must have panicked when he misjudged thinking he could get Beck at 38 ..

So you want a fast 2 way centre that is ready to play this season....at 38? You alright?

This is why I hated the trade down. I’m not gonna say it’s a bad pick but it’s a considerable drop off compared to what we could have had at 25.

My preference would have been to have traded up to secure Yurov. That would have brightened the organizational outlook long term. You know, proactively build with high value pieces.

No clue, no comment.

Should be the same approach with posters who have no experience in seeing such a player IN person.

Got to see him in person as he played against my hometown Kelowna Rockets, but I don't really recall much of him to be honest.

Here is a bit from a scouting report from another agency.

What makes Minten so intriguing is his ability to remain calm and collected in his own zone. He doesn’t make mistakes often and understands where he needs to be in the defensive zone at all times. When he gets to a loose puck, he is able to make the smart breakout play which is a rare quality to have for a 17-year-old. His calmness in the defensive zone is a large reason why the Blazers have given up the least amount of goals in the Western Hockey League’s (WHL) Western Conference and own the fifth-best penalty kill in the entire league.

As for his offensive game, this is an area where Minten does need to improve. While he has shown an ability to get open which has led to scoring chances, his ability to carry the puck into the zone is an area of concern. Rather than doing that, he seems to favour the dump and chase game. Luckily, he has made positive strides in his game on the boards and is able to pressure the defence into turnovers. Driving the center of the ice with the puck is a part of his game he will need to develop next season, as sometimes passing it off to his winger will not be an option.

Fraser Minten – NHL Draft Projection

When it comes to draft position, there is no clear indication of where he fits in. Some, believe he is an early third-rounder, while others see him more as a late third-rounder, maybe even falling to the fourth. If he has a strong playoff, it is not out of the question he could even push his way into the second round, but the most likely outcome is somewhere between 75th-80th overall,

No way. They had all night to come up with a list of 6 players they wanted at 38.

If teams always followed public rankings, there'd be no need to employ scouts or draft analysis of their own.

Just need to hope this ends up one of those mid draft steals rather than off the board flops. We'll know for sure in a couple years where this guy is heading closer to being.

Ok then why wouldn’t you weigh the analysis of the scouts then who all has him going in 3rd round and claiming him to be at best a 3rd liner

These comments are not based on public rankings but rather what the hockey world has him ranked. A 3rd liner with above average skill

So weak man, come on.
What is? Literally the point of the trade was to clear Mrazeks cap space? I am actually confused what the issue here is lol who we take with the pick we got back is irrelevant to the outlook of the trade. Obviously the pick can be judged on it's own.

Looks like a really young guy. Just turned 18 a few days ago.

2nd line center with Kamloops. He should get a bigger opportunity next year. 5th on the team in points and performed well in the playoffs relative to those who put up more points in the regular season.

With the right opportunity next year, it looks like he could put up a good season.

They already have guys on the Marlies who can play the 4th. line this season.

Unless he's a 2nd. round pick like Bergeron, these kids aren't playing in the NHL this year.
