Many Leaf fans have proactively been pleading for an new backup goalie and some much needed size and grit since the summer.

Apparently if you complain long enough eventually Dubas will come around and see the light. :sarcasm:

Its interesting hearing Dubas PC today and how he is praising the skillset that Clifford brings when he has been systematically clearing out these types of players and been opposed to it earlier.

Maple Leafs’ Dubas believes Clifford trade will make ‘big impact’

Yes, as a pending UFA, Clifford is a rental for now — but one the GM and the club’s fans may wish to keep around.

Clifford’s edge and how it’s tailor-made for the post-season grind will be the first point of conversation. The man has racked up as many as 24 fights in a single NHL campaign (2010-11, pre-season through post-season). And even in this, a light season, Clifford has dropped the gloves as often as the entire conflict-adverse Maple Leafs roster combined (three).

Clifford arrives as far and away the club leader in career PIMs with 819 — comparatively, at age 36 and with 447 more games played, Jason Spezza is only at 570 — and singlehandedly begins to curb the Leafs’ reputation as being an easy team to play against, as far as bumps and bruises are concerned.

“He has some elements that we don’t have in abundance,” Dubas said. “Number 1 is, he’s still a player that you don’t have to hide. He doesn’t need to play two or three minutes a night.

“He’ll be able to play in the bottom end of our lineup and do those things with our group and hopefully get our team onto offense. And let our big guys come out in the offensive zone and roll from there.”

Something to be said about firing up the crowd with aggressive play.
I always felt the year that we had Orr, MacLaren and Mark Fraser those guys would get the crowd going. Nobody likes a feisty player more than Leaf fans.

Hopefully Clifford will bring the same energy to the building...and maybe it will rub off on GOAT and he will finish a check

But Clifford is not just here to start and end scrums. The knuckles are certainly not the only portion of his hands that are useful. He has proven to be a valuable bottom-six contributor, albeit on a bad team.

Trust me on this, Campbell will be a better starting goalie than that choke Andersen. He way quicker and has better reflexes than Andersen too, plus he actually likes playing in high pressure games unlike the choker Andersen. Cant wait to see him steal the starting job from the overrated Andersen. You will realize how slow Andersens reflexes are compared to a true atheletic goalie like Campbell.

Campbell is one of the more athletic goalies in the NHL. I love Campbell and I think he's going to be a huge upgrade on Hutch, but his problem has always been mental and technique. I highly doubt he's better than Andersen who's stronger from a technical standpoint and is quickly approaching underrated territory on these boards.

Of course I'll happily eat crow if Campbell is somehow good enough to take the starter position. If he wants to suddenly turn into a .930 goalie then whatever, I won't complain.

Haha, did you see him get mad at Dermott for sliding his stick in front of him, then he picked it up,fumbles for grip and gets scored on lol. Dermott was out to lunch there and deserved whatever hutch said to him. You don’t distract a goalie like that and cover nobody in the process. That goal was on Dermott, just saying. Hutch was p!ssed

"Piss off"

Leafs make the playoffs now. Biggest contribution, other than their skills, is their ATTITUDE. They want to play for the Leafs. 2nd rd here we come.

All wrong
He welcomes toughness but they have to be able to play. Unlike Komarov
Those guys are hard to find
Biggest fallacy out there that he's not into toughness at all

Went to sleep angry, stayed away from sports radio all day and didn't even know about the trade until an hour ago. sheesh.

Any way..good trade. Clifford is childhood Leaf fan.Kings fans love him, hate to see him go, heart and soul guy, won two cups, can play as well as provide toughness, but the best...the absolute best, is if he was a heart and soul player for LaLa Land, he's going to be epic on the Leafs. He' s going to be a fan favourite.

Campbell soidifies the backup position, but more importantly, can take on the role as a starter if Andersen goes down for a significant amout of time down the stretch here.

We know what Moore is...he is a good tweener 3rd/4th liner...but Clifford is going to fill that bottom depth role much better with experience as well. a couple of 3rds, decent for what the return is.

I ran a pythagorean expectation for both Campbell & Hutch using their respective GAAs prorated over 15 GP as well as the Leafs GPG on the season.

Campbell was 'worth' nearly two more wins and when you account for OTL/SOL, probably 5-6 points.

While the math is crude, an additional 0.33 pts per start would be a substantial upgrade.

It feels good to have the backup position looked after. The fact he is signed for a few years takes the sting out of the picks lost. I like Campbell. I think he's a good backup goalie, maybe a 1B in the right environment. We need him now with Andersen out.

Clifford in for Moore is an upgrade. The Leafs get a heavy forward for the playoffs. Playing here early gives him better odds to be re-signed. But, they may opt not to if they can save that 2nd rd. Pick. Clifford getting in the odd fight should give them some energy.

The team gets better and harder to play against.

Moore was a promising player, but may have never gotten a proper chance on this team. He will in LA.

Well I was responding to a post that set up the premise of the outcome of missing the playoffs and letting Barrie, Muzzin and Clifford walk. :)

However that said it really doesn't change all the picks and prospects out betting on this season even if the Leafs make the playoffs as they still leave regardless of playoffs or not. In fact one of the 3rds becomes a 2nd if the Leafs are in.

It would then all come down to if the Leafs win the Cup because if they should then all transactions will be worth it regardless of the cost going forward, and anything less than a Cup will have the same final outcome as missing them would essentially as there are no participation ribbons handed out.

Really comes down to resigning of Muzzin, Barrie and or Clifford as to retained value beyond this season.

PS. Zaitsev and Brown were shipped for Ceci and Harpur and since Zaitsev and Ceci have the same AAV this year its really a wash on this season.. Its future years where you let Ceci walk and reuse cap space on future Zaitsev remaining years is where you have new cap space for future expenditures.

Oh ok. Got the backup with term and the tough forward. The picks are four years out with developing and who cares that far out when you need to worry about playoffs now. Thats the price of doing business right there. Moore was a fourth liner basically and we kept our main chips for another move or two or multiplayer type thing.

Personally i value picks in the 3rd so they aren’t just a pick. Clifford and Muzzin extended turns the table significantly. Barrie,Ceci and Kerfoot I don’t care about. Kerfoot might get you Dillon even. Guys walking means cap space also and i think it wise we value it too. You shouldn’t say they walked and we got nothing for them. Cap space is a asset

Is there an expiry date where resigning Clifford will give a 2nd rounder. Like re-sign him in Sept
Best case is Campbell wins 5 games
Leafs makes the playoffs
Re-sign Clifford without giving the 2nd.

That condition pick is for 2021, so no, that wouldn't work.

Can't help but think we'd be about the same or better with Zaitsev than Ceci. Ceci is like Zaitsev but more skittish and more prone to catastrophic errors.
Z was more skittich IMO and Ceci is a lot better with the puck overall, but Z battled harder.

Good trade. Campbell is an upgrade on Hutch and Clifford brings some much needed sand paper with a bit of skill. Now maybe teams will think twice before they charge Freddie again, especially when he's on the ice.

I do think Campbell could be an underrated addition over the next few years. He could be a really good fit. If not he has some value, so they'd return some of what was lost in this trade if they had to try again.

I wonder if he still has some untapped potential in him. Ranford and Imoo have been pretty good with goalies over the years. Similar career arc to Jordan Binnington as WJC stars but actually fell from higher draft pedigree. Has great athleticism and skillset but just never got on track in the Dallas system.

Can Jack Campbell still be a starter?

Please make Campbell the starting goalie even when Andersen comes back. Campbell so much better positionaly and better reflexes than Andersen. He was 10-14-1 and still put up a .928 sv% on a garbage team last year. Pretty sure he was a top 10 draft pick too, as a goalie that is super tough to do.

Just like with Penguins and Bruins...
Teams with good Tandems can use one as a starter and ride a hot streak and then switch over.

Its about damn time we had this since Mcbackup and this is more promising

I guess for a guy that doesn't believe in physicality, this is a pretty big admission of error.

I really don't care if he has done a 180 though. I don't care if the Dubas backers are having a tough time with the idea of grit.

I'm glad he finally addressed this with at least a look towards not getting pushed around anymore.

A few more wouldn't be a bad idea, either. I did like Moore in the playoffs last year. Noticeable in his determination.

Like the trade overall.

Like the admission of error.

Like rolling the dice on a new goalie but let's call it what it is... a gamble. And it's a bet you have to make. Without Andersen, playoffs go away.

I think it's a bit erroneous to suggest that Dubas didn't believe in grit. His Marlies team had some grit. I think he's just selective about it.

I've heard too many interviews with him to think he believes in it.

Even the audacity to say he's heard around the league that teams think they can come in and push us around.

He didn't want a fighter... wanted someone who could play.

Just consider this:

Matt Martin Career ATOI - 11:24 - 676 GP and 129 PTS
Kyle Clifford Career ATOI - 10:17 - 660 GP and 129 PTS

We had one. He traded him.

And now... we have one again.

haha lol wow guy has not played a game under the lights in the big smoke, and you post this wow!
