Classic Leafs. They’ve loved playing a premium for old players on the back nine of their careers for 20 years now.

Numbers aside, this is a player with average skating and play in his own zone. There is a reason he’s been a career fringe NHLer. To pay and play him like a top 4 dman because he had a career year racking up PP points with the Hart trophy winner is foolish.

He’s been a solid top four two-way defender for three years. He broke out scoring because he got a lot more ice time and PP time this season, which he’ll continue to get in Toronto.

No one expects him to be a point per game superstar like he was last year but if he was he’d be making a hell of a lot more than $8.5 million.

Brandon Montour age 30 signed two years ago his 3 seasons before signing that contract 33 points, 73 points 37 points.
Raddysh age 30 last 3 seasons his points are 33 points 37 points 70 points.

Signed for the exact same percentage of the cap. This is the going rate for exactly this type of defenceman.
