They aren't contenders again yet but are not as far as you would think assuming this is true.

Knies-Matthews-Nylander
Mckenna-JT-Cowan

Is a pretty stacked top six.

McCabe-Tanev
OEL-Raddysh
Rielly-Villeneuve
Andrae

Is a much better defense than what they iced for most of the season. They also still have a lot of cap to spend, some more Marlies to graduate into their bottom 6 and passable goaltending in Stolarz and Hildeby/Akhtyamov. That is almost certainly a playoff team.
I think they can be a playoff team. They are never contending for a cup with JT as a 2nd line center. Toronto is stuck in no man’s land. They can retool and have no choice as their next 2 1sts are gone and be a playoff team but that’s all they will be for the immediate future.

When you don't own your firsts for the next two years rebuilding was never going to be an option. If the team has to blow it up in 2 years, Raddysh should be moveable unless his play falls off hard. In that case we are rebuilding and likely don't need the cap space.
Exactly, This is why I said I kind of like the deal, They don't really have a choice, might as well push for the best UFA on the market.

If this backfires tho, Oh man, would be a complete disaster having a 30+ year old D-man for a long term deal.

We wait now and see what the contract will look like

Nothing that is signed this offseason can possibly be worse than Huberdeau. So we good

Eh I don't think Tavares is a bad 2c at all. He was still a 70 point player this last season and his skillset tends to age more gracefully than someone who relies on speed. Where I think the big hole in our roster is right now is that even with Raddysh we still have no slam dunk #1 defenseman or a 3c capable of scoring.

That roster honestly scares absotely nobody

You realize how old that blueline is and betting on a 36/37y Tanec C’moon now

+ they don’t have their own 1st round picks for the next 2 years so like I said building a team that’s ceiling is average

How does it make sense for any team? This is divisive on the Tampa board because although he massive produced, he's also nearly in the perfect situation with Moser, McDonagh and Cernak carrying the defensive load while he is able to set up/get set up by the best playmaking winger in the league. If there's any sort of system adjustment he needs to make moving to a new team he's instantly going to drop 20+ points compared to last year.

From what I read they want a mobile, puck moving defenseman, Raddysh is not that, he is a bomb from the point, that's mostly it.
It makes sense because if they want to extend their window they have to keep Matthews, and to keep Matthews they have to bounce back and have a positive environment this year. If they were to trade him, then you might as well start tearing the rest down, like a Knies trade, because they have no good centers and could use more assets to stockpile for a rebuild.

As far as how to get better, it's no secret they've needed better puck-moving from their defense. They already have a bunch of veteran defensive guys so that shouldn't be an issue, but to add a guy who can actually shoot the puck and score on the PP to give them another layer of a threat is something they need.

Raddysh isn't the perfect package who ticks every single box, but they did add Andrae as well who is a mobile dman with some untapped potential, so between these two guys it's clear what they're going for.

They have cap space up the wazoo, especially if someone actually takes on Rielly who needs to get moved for everyone's sake. If this doesn't work out for Raddysh and the team, they're probably done anyway and don't mind retaining salary, the only one who loses is the owner's pockets.

Basically it's a desperate situation to just find ways to get better for the upcoming season, even if his production go down by 30% that's still better than any dman 3 of the last 4 years. It's been bad in that regard.

So when I say it "makes sense", doesn't mean that this is a great thing to do, but given the circumstances you can see why they would do it.

I actually think he's better than he gets credit for but there really isn't much chance this isn't a disaster contract.

1) it's the Leafs
2) one outlier year with several environmental circumstances
3) wrong side of the aging curve
4) going from Jon Cooper to Jim Hiller
5) going from relative anonymity to hell's frying pan
6) the rest of that blueline is hideous
7) it's the Leafs

The blueline is old but the Leafs are still going to have like 20 million in cap after signing Raddysh if this is true and have a couple of young D in Villeneuve and Andrae who should be able to handle bottom pairing duties if they decide to get more youthful and move Rielly. Seeing Danford has been great for the Marlies in their playoff run it looks like he's probably about a year away from making the roster. I almost guarantee you there's more changes coming to the D after this.

One thing tho is very important, The deal better have a limited NTC after 2/3 years.
Encase this backfires

Aww, ain't that cute... you keep trying to post these thoughts thinking they're clever... but it's just like the Leafs in the postseason, it ends with zero success and taking a dump in front of hockey fans everywhere.
