Not a Leafs fan but I think that contact is market value.

There is clear risk with it, due to possibly being a 1 year wonder and playing for a strong Lightning team. But this was likely what multiple teams would have paid for him - so fair market value.

To me Toronto is coming to the end of it contender window (depending on Matthews) so this makes a lot of sense. They really are not worried about 5 years from now.

8 years for a dude that's going to be 31 half way through the first year of his contract and has one good season. When has a contract like that ever worked out for a team? I get why they did it,they have no choice but to either rebuild or maybe huge gambles but this is going to be ugly. You have decades of free agency to pull from give me examples.
Oh right, because old players with large contracts never get buried or moved so all franchises that have them are instantly destroyed right? New to hockey?

The real question is; which Raddysh will the get? The PPG dman from last season, the 35pts dman he has been the previous 2 years, the guy that didn't show up in this year's playoffs?

Are they paying for a 1 year wonder and a guy that again, can't elevate his play comes the playoffs or for a guy that only needed a real chance?

I personally wouldn't sign him and didn't like his play, but their options are limited.

8 years to a 30 year old undrafted dman who had 1 good year this past year at age 30 on a super offensive Tampa team.

Good job Toronto.

What could go wrong?

:naughty:

Right sided defenceman who can move the puck and man the PP are a valuable commodity. Term is long but the cap hit will be very manageable especially in 2-3 years

also nice that after all the Marner discourse a local guy specifically wanted to come home and play for the Leafs, this is not a contract he'd be hard to duplicate from someone else on July 1st.
Why do you get the notion he chose the Leafs? They traded for him.

And no, he could not get this contract on July 1st because of the 8 year term (which is the most questionnable part of it)
