Brodie would be the perfect partner for Reilly if he was a bit grittier, but for 5M and finishing before he's 34 it's hard not to like this deal would have taken him back on Calgary for this contract in a heartbeat

Its a solid deal. Its not often players ofnhis caliber sign for this price as an UFA.
Yeah, very pleased with Dubas here.

I take Brodie at $5M @ 4 years over Pietrangelo at $10M @ 7 years. Toronto just has no cap for that.

This deal really shouldn’t be a surprise. Like has been mentioned, Leafs showed interest last year through trade, and similarly, that trade showed him Calgary considered him expendable.

He’s from southern Ontario. It’s probably a decent situation for him and his wife to be in. Money and term are right, and as others have said, AAV likely would have been a million higher without Covid.

He will be a great addition to Toronto’s top 4, even if he doesn’t bring the physicality they are searching for. His skating and stick work allows him to make great plays at both ends of the ice. It’s going to be hard to see one of my favourite Flames in blue and white. It is going to be a big loss to our blue line, which Tanev does not fill completely.

On the other hand i think Tanev allows us to transition to our younger giys better. Resigning Brodie would have meant we still run him and Gio on all thr heavy lifting. This allows us to mold Hanifin, Andersson and Valimaki into legitimate top pairing caliber defenseman

If you look at the sad history of Morgan Rielly D partners, Brodie is a great addition.

Hunwick, Franson, Hainsey, Marincin, Ceci, Polak, etc. Hainsey is the only legitimate top 4 dman he's played with, and that was a very slow Hainsey near end of his career.

Now just get harmonic for the 3rd pair for some grit and experience and I’d be ok with our defence. Not sold on lethonen yet. Scared it might be another ozighanov situation

My recollection is the isles traded hamonic because he wanted to play
close to home. I doubt he considers the leafs.

I’m worried Giordano can’t do the heavy lifting anymore. I hope Hanifin and Andersson play top minutes this year. Obvious slant towards PP and ES. Haven’t thought too much about it yet, and it may depend on if there is another move for a defenceman, but I’d kind of like to see Giordano and Tanev paired with younger guys. Maybe paired together on PK and late in the game though?

Big disappointment not to get Piet. Other divisional fans could not be happier with this signing.

Even the hate from Habs and Sens fans has calmed down a lot.

But those Western teams you listed - it's like they hate the Leafs more than they cheer for their own team. Bizarre stuff.

Agreed outside a couple of Sens and Habs fans on here who are ridiculous in their hatred it is mostly fun between the fan bases.

I think it is because we all know one another out here while the Western Canadian fans see Toronto as this mythical evil monster that gobbles up all the radio airtime and TV content.

After this signing Leafs are at :

4 defensive side players cap hit (1 G, 3 D) + 4 offensive side players cap hit (4 F)
= 8 players cap hit = about 61 000 000 (75%)

Great signing but um....

Wow, so many nice things said about a Leafs signing!

It's true, Brodie does seem like a really good fit - our best option in recent yrs may have been an old Ron Hainsey!

Having said that, good to see Flames get a replacement. Like many, I like Tanev - when healthy.

I think Gio and Tanev will stsrt the season with the 23 year olds respectively but half way through Hanifin and Andersson will take over as the #1 pair and Gio - Tanev as the #2, more sheltered for preserving health. Next year we may even have Tanev play with Valimaki which I think will really help develop him into a legitimate #1.

Didn't like the Simmonds signing, but I think this is a smart, low key move. Fair contract that is workable under the cap. Curious to see how Dubas/Pridham get under the cap as they've said they have a few ways to do it that most people don't expect.

Rielly, Brodie, Muzzin, Holl. Is that a series winning top 4 D? Hey, my expectations are low. Gotta start somewhere. So, is it?

I still think Leafs need to add another proven top 4 guy.

It's a series winning top 3 D. You guys might need better than Holl, but there's always the trade deadline for that. If I were a Leafs fan I'd be hoping Liljegren takes a huge step forward as that #4 guy

As of now theyre 1 mil over with max roster size. Dumping kerfoot puts them 2.5 under. I suspect that comes just a bit short of covering their new salaries but not by far.

That's actually not accurate. That includes a number of players who will be on the Marlies next season. It's more like 1.5 in cap space when you account for that. Still not enough to sort out our RFAs though.

To really bolster their defence and solidify their chances to contend, I agree that there needs to be an upgrade on Holl. Push him down to third pair as a guy that step up during injuries, sure. Maybe that guy is already there in Sandin, but think a veteran addition is needed.

Sandin plays left side and Holl the right. If someone in the Leafs system will push down Hill, the Leafs are looking at Lehtonen or Liljegren.
