Brodie was good his first few years. He’s been the Flames whipping boy the past two years so I’m not sure how he deserves a raise and this type of term. I’m happy this will put the Leafs in a financial pinch haha.

This honestly sucks. He was our best dman last season and he’s a tremendous person. He is super quiet though so I’m curious how will be received in TO.

All the best Brodes.

He was not a whipping boy this year, this was one of the best seasons hes had in years. I don't know if you will find a Flames fan that disagrees with that. He didnt put up a lot of points but he was super reliable all year and rarely made any relevant mistakes.

Yeah but for this type of $$$, I’d be wanting more than steady. When he first came into the league he looked exciting as a very mobile Dman who was plus on both sides of the ice. He was more consistent this year probably obably since he put in more effort knowing it’s a contract year... yet he was still ineffective offensively. So when he shows some inconsistency in defending and doesn’t bring offense or other elements like physicality, his contract is going to be an albatross.

I take McAvoy over Rielly, but I gotta say there's way more potential for one of Toronto's lower down guys to step up and fill a larger role than there is for Boston. Who knows how much Liljegren or Sandin's games improve heading into next year. Lehtonen is just destroying Finland right now. Dermott, kinda seems like he is what he is at this point but he's still young.

I disagree on dermott. I think he's more than ready for a 2nd pairing role. He's the type of player you regret selling low on so I sure hope they hang on to him.

I don't know man, he seems like one of those guys with good tools who just plays a bit faster than he thinks. He shows flashes but he gets ahead of himself too much. You could be right though, trade him, he gains a little more poise and you're regretting it.

I think you missed last year? He was their best d

Brodie has been a top pair defenceman for a very, very large chunk of his career. He's not a #1, but a very solid #2. Even Muzzin, many would classify as a #2 defenceman. Look around the league, how many teams have 2 defencemen better than Brodie or Muzzin? Maybe a dozen?

Holl has shown to be a very capable #4 defenceman for us. Dermott would likely be fine as a #4 with the right partner. He showed many flashes of it last year as a 22 year old. Then you factor in the upside that Liljegren, Sandin & Lehtonen have; and the Leafs should be fine for "depth".

The real challenge IMO is -- they have too many defencemen that are all kind of the same... Rielly, Brodie, Dermott, Sandin, Liljegren, Lehtonen -- all guys who are average sized, move the puck well, but can occasionally get outmuscled in the defensive zone. If you compare to Tampa, Muzzin-Holl are somewhat similar to McDonagh-Cernak; but Rielly is not Hedman, and none of our guys are Zach Bogosian or have the size of Sergachev.
