Confirmed Trade: [TOR/STL/MIN] O'Reilly, Acciari, Pillar to TOR; Abramov, Gaudette, ‘23 1st, ‘23 3rd, ‘24 2nd to STL; ‘25 4th to MIN

These trades always confuse me. Was ROR traded to Minnesota on paper and then they retained, or can you just straight up retain other teams player's salary?

I agree but a slight change: the picks are meaningless to Toronto as long as they win.

This really seems like a deal where the value paid doesn't matter, all that matters is whether they win.
No, the picks are meaningless for a team that is trying to win now. Matthews and Nylander (after next season ) and Marner and Tavares (after the following season) are UFAs. The chances of these picks contributing while these guys are under contract are slim. The Leafs want to win while these guys are under contract, and those picks are meaningless in that regard.

It's technically multiple trades happening.
ROR would need to be traded to MIN by STL and then a second trade would need to be run with MIN trading ROR to TOR with retention

There's no actual three way trades

Questionable trade for the Leafs. A 1st, 2nd, and a 3rd for O'Reilly is a lot given the season he's having.

Oh well, will make their highly probably first round exit even funnier I guess

This would have been great for the Leafs a couple of years ago before ROR's body broke down. That being said, give less minutes for ROR, he'll still be valuable.

Live look at Patrick Kane.

All MN got was a 2025 4th for retaining close to 2M? What the Hell?

Apparently wrong…wish that reporters would fact check before putting stuff out there.

It's an overpayment by Toronto, but all they care about is whether they win. This deal is a success if they win because of it. If they can't go deep in the playoffs, it's going to look terrible.

Not an overpayment at all imo.

No roster players

No top prospects

2 legit nhl bodies coming back.

Those picks are magic beans for the leafs at this stage and can be recouped

The picks are meaningless used as draft picks, but they have value as trade chips to improve the roster.

That's why I said it all depends on whether or not they win. It's not that they might have been better off keeping the picks, it's that trading this many picks for a rental in ROR will look good or bad depending on whether they win in the playoffs because of it.

There's so many pieces, one can easily get the impression that there's a bigger haul here than there really is. It's a late 1st + spare parts and that's a pretty standard going rate when adding a proven veteran rental player of this stature.
