Confirmed with Link: TOR sign RD Zach Bogosian [1 year, 1M]

Doubt it. They won't let Sandin or Liljegren rot in the press box. Marincin is your perfect "don't care about hurting development, wasting away, he is what he is, league minimum contract". He's likely still the #7 for those reasons. This coming from someone who can't stand Marincin btw.
Yup. He's a minimum salary lifer here.

You can only use LTIR if a player is going to miss a minimum of 10 games.

So what do the Leafs do if any non waiver-exempt player gets banged up and needs a few days off?

Use 19 players for multiple games? Put the player on LTIR anyway and have them miss 10 games instead of maybe just 2? And what if there are multiple players in that scenario, which happens multiple times a season?

I don't think it's quite as simple as people are suggesting.

Go with 19 players (or fewer) for a game. Then use emergency recall. The player can't have an AAV above 800K.

On D they would not be able to bring up Sandin, Liljegren or Lehtonen with emergency recall. Only Marincin, Rosen, Kivi, Duszak, Hollowell, Rubins etc.

On F they would not be able to bring up Korshkov, Barabanov or Joey Anderson (assuming he accepts his QO or signs something higher). They would be able to bring up Petan, Ago, Brooks, Malgin.

If we keep Dermott + Mikheyev to a combined ~2.6M, that could work. I don't know how ideal running a 21 man roster is for an entire season though. Seems like very limited flexibility. You pretty much couldn't scratch or sit a player with a minor injury for a game unless they could go on LTIR or be sent to the minors without waivers.

If we need a little more space, replacing Engvall with a 700-800K guy is the path of least resistsance.

The Leafs will do The Marlie Shuffle with their waiver-exempt players to create cap space as the season goes on - by TDL they'll be able to carry 23 men (if they don't bring anyone in.)

There is a flat cap. Teams who can spend are already bumping up against the ceiling. Teams who can't spend, well, can't spend because of the expected lack of gate revenue for at least part of next year. All that means is that when the music stops, there is a high chance that some decent NHL players are going to be left without jobs. By no means am I railing against either the Simmonds signing or this signing; I'd just rather wait and see who is available come training camp over signing those two for $1.1M above league minimum. That's the logic. You can agree or disagree with it, but it most certainly does make sense.

I think this is fair, but the Leafs still have flexibility to get these bargain bin guys by either not bringing over guys from Russia (Korshkov), go with a smaller roster, squeeze their RFAs even further, or move out other pieces like Engvall (who can also go down to the Marlies without waivers and save them $1M).

I do agree that Simmonds was a bit above what I was hoping for, but he's still a legitimate top-9 forward and he's got that physical side that apparently is a premium in the NHL today.

His PK ability is one of the most important aspects he brings. Solid signing. I can see Sandin playing next to him at some point.

Have to think he slots in on the bottom pair next to Dermott/Sandin

Rielly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott/Sandin-Bogosian
Lehtonen
Marincin
Liljegren

Seems pretty clear to me one of Holl/Dermott/Sandin is trade bait. Quite the crowded blueline.

On the morning of February 24th Bobby Mac said on the radio that the day before (Feb 23rd) Bogo was probably going to sign with Toronto, but after the loss on the 22nd to Carolina (with David Ayres in net) Toronto contacted Bogo's agent and said the team was pulling out so Bogo went with Tampa. As Toronto and Tampa played each other on the 25th that was where Bogo had already been heading to play his first game for one or the other.

LOL you doubters. Top four, no less an he will be solid.

riiiight ... he sucks for 10+ years ... plays great for 15 games playing with the best dman on the planet and now everyone thinks hes good .....
christ hes marincin replacement in the pressbox and nothing else.

Buffalo fans tend to get salty, especially when the takes are "We got the better Nylander" or, "Our rebuild is better than the Leafs"
Well it's buffalo, they have a lot to be salty about
They are a franchise that has had some bad luck in a rebuild.
If we compare our rebuild to theirs, we are light years ahead.
Funny how when it started the head office was saying its will be a long road, and I don't believe that's changed, so we are probably still on that timetable

Can't get Pietro? Get the guy drafted higher than him at a fraction of the price tag...:sarcasm:

Seriously, this is a very good add for Dubas...surprised he still wanted to be a Leaf...Bogosian played well for TB on their Cup run...can't skate or pivot like he used to, but we have Rielly and Brodie for that...Bogosian is a big strong d man with net front presence, and could stop the cycle...a middle-class man's Polak.

If management blocks players career path to obtain depth throughout season, its going to create friction on the team. Ideally your depth doesn't create that by having players that can sit or be in AHL. I don't see that in this situation.

If you hate the Leafs, why do you post here so much? Genuinely asking.
He tried early on, but his Buffalo Sabre roots finally showed through.

And he is allowed to post with impunity. As a Leaf fan, try doing that to anyone else's board.

Good luck.

No you are not genuinely asking. I don't hate the Leafs. I don't mindlessly cheer on every move the current GM does - as many do on here. I have been saying where the Leafs' were strong and where they were flawed for several years on here. When I started complaining about the flaws with Lou I got a lot of flack, especially from many of the biggest Dubas homers today. When I started complaining about the flaws with Babcock I got a lot of flack, especially from many of the biggest Dubas homers today. When I said that this team needed players like Simmonds and Bogo I got a lot of flack, especially from many of the biggest Dubas homers today.

I, unlike almost everyone else on here, was very familiar with Dubas and his views before he became GM and I have called out his hypocrisy. They have badly screwed up their rebuild, much of that on Dubas and Shanahan. Almost every Leafs' fans recognizes that previous management teams of the Leafs' screwed up previous rebuilds. Do they all hate the Leafs as well? Or is it only people who have a different view than you on the current Leafs and their GM?
I was genuinely asking. No need for the hissy fit.

But anyways that doesn't answer my question. Why do you post here if you are a Sabres fan? You trash the Leafs on the mainboards - why not just keep it there?

I agree with you that it is ridiculous that there are some people who are pro-Dubas no matter what and some people that are anti-Dubas no matter what. It literally makes no sense.

No, again you are not genuinely asking. People can be fans of multiple teams, surely you know that. People can be pissed off about what the team(s) they cheer for are doing - in fact it is very common. Did you ask me these questions when I complained about what Lou was doing, or when I complained about what Babs was doing? Nope.
