Confirmed with Link: TOR re-sign D Travis Dermott [1 year, 874K]

Ya it seems like usage often isn't taken into consideration when talking about Dermott who has been an extremely sheltered 3rd pairing defender since he entered the league. That being said has been excellent in that role and hasn't been given a real chance to play in the top 4 as Muzzin/Rielly are blocking him. Let's hope he can play the right side and give us an option in the top 4.

Fair enough.

I think in one of Dubas' interviews he had said that the Leafs envision Dermott playing on the right side anyway so he either slots next to Muzz (if Holl is not as good in training camp or is traded); or plays LD with Bogo on the 3rd pair

I think Muzzin needs a puck distributer on that pair; don't think Holl has it in him, Dermott might be it; they may try it I guess.

What I've seen of Dermott is that when he plays a patient game he is excellent that includes moving the puck; sometimes he tries to do too much and gets caught out of position; I think Muzzin can help him there.

Playing with freakin' Barrie obviously wasnt good for his confidence IMO

Or he truly wants to be a Leaf and understands the current situation. He's a hometown boy, nice to see. Hope he gets a nice little raise next contract

I wish the other home town boy Mitchy would have been thinking like that...would have made so much sense. I still think Mitch lost more in endorsements than he scooped up with the contract. I for one would steer clear of any product he is pushing just because of him TBH.

There is nothing advanced about the so called "advanced" stats and they don't have context. I am not gonna do that dance with you again.

whats the mathematical formula for GAR? What are its limitations?

everytime I've asked that question to you whether is xGF, corsi, etc....you basically stop responding; I do "numbers" for a living so don't like it when they are thrown around without context.

As you were.....
I'll help you out by saying the purpose of GAR is to not make Leafs players look as good as possible, so your criticism makes no sense.

They need to trade one of him or Holl. This makes it easier to trade him cos it's cheap.

Think about it, our defense is a disaster yet we're still bringing back all five of Dermott, Holl, Marincin, Rielly, and Muzzin. That's very little turnover on a defense. You bring some new names in but too many of the old names are still there.

Dude might find success somewhere some day but he also takes up a roster spot and we know it doesn't work here.

And Tavares too ;)
I agree

They have played average in the playoffs .
We need greatness
They all need to go through the wall.
Going to the net blocking shots taking a hit to make a play .
Hopefully with the players we brought will drag them into a fight.

So does this mean that he's gonna be put on the 3rd pair again and not given a shot with Muzzin on the 2nd pair?

Travesty!!!!

No really a good "show me" 1 year deal . Cmon Dermott show us something

Okay you're right, a defence which brings back 5 of the same guys (Rielly, Dermott, Holl, Muzzin, and Marincin) will find great success all of a sudden.

The defense that was 10th in all situations xGA/60 after Keefe took over is bringing back its 4 best regulars and adding TJ Brodie & Mikko Lehtonen with Sandin & Liljegren patiently waiting for their shot.

I'd say our defense is in a better position than ever.

Good deal for the Leafs. Seems like Dermott could be moved this season or at years end. Opening night D core I think is the below.

Reilly-Brodie
Muzzin-Holl
Dermott-Bogosian

*Sandin is NHL ready, especially if he has added size since the March layoff. His IQ is higher than Dermott's.
*Lehtonen is having a great start to the KHL.

Either of Sandin or Lehtonen could push Dermott out, sooner than later.

I would like to see Dermott start the year at least and see how his decision making is doing. His IQ/reads/decisions make him look lost at times. He steps up into the neutral zone to lay the body and more often than not, misses his target, its just a wild approach that he has not dialed in. He can have a physical edge but he is using it wrong in that situation. He also overall, lacks engagement in the game. He can have time and space in his own zone to skate the puck out but he will freeze and appear confused on what to do. He has excellent feet but isnt using them all the time to get away from pressure or skate it out.

also the goaltending depth is as good as ever. Campbell and Dell are both good backups. Also I think the forwards are better defensively

Marincin? Dude is like 10th on the depth charts now. He's basically a professional press box warmer.

It's Dermott, Holl, Rielly, Muzzin back.

Ceci, Barrie, Marincin out (at least of the top seven)

Replaced with Brodie, Lehtonen and Bogo... that's only what a 43% turnover.... LOL seriously.

I wonder if this kind of contract makes Dermott more of a candidate to stick around, or an even more attractive trade chip?

I'd hope they tread carefully with trades, and specifically for those expected to play in the top six more often than not. An injury or two - particularly at or near the top of the depth chart - and the depth gets tested again IMO.

Does this contract effect or protect him from the expansion draft?

If he was smart he would signed before Soup and got some of if not all of soups money.

I still think Dermott becomes a solid 2nd pair guy... I just hope it's with the Leafs.

If Bogo can stay healthy I think he pairs well with Dermott.

An absolute steal of a deal.
Dermott will be motivated to improve his value for next season.
Leafs get to determine whether he is better than the options already with the team. At this price he's certainly an attractive part of a trade scenario.
Given the likelihood of a compacted schedule, having 6 D with NHL experience signed, Lehtonen in the wings and crushing it, and having Sandin and Lily close to graduating offers the Leafs some confidence and flexibility on the backend. It's not just going to be goalies who are flipped in b2b's this year.

To answer the q's wondering how the #Leafs become compliant, there are multiple options: 1. 21 player roster: 2 players clear enough cap 2. 22 player roster: bury a player with cap >= 1.05M 3. Trade 4. LTIR placement A buyout is no longer an option, their 2nd window is closed
