Confirmed with Link: TOR re-sign D Travis Dermott [1 year, 874K]

I had given the Leafs off season a B+ before this and Mikheyev signing. Now it’s a solid A, considering the flat cap. Dermott has this year to really show what he is, and he is still an RFA after this year. Nobody beside Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie are long(ish) term, so Leafs can really gauge who they want to keep/promote after this year with nobody really weighing them down on defense.

Nylander is outplaying his contract already... looks like a bargain right now. Matthews is about on par for a top-5 player, maybe under on term... Marner is really the big outlier at about $2m above his value
Marner on pace for 96 points and I agree he didn't have a great yr.
Mathews on pace for 93 points
Nylander on pace for 71 points

we have Marner and Mathews that if they finish the careers as a maple leaf will be 1 and 2 in points all time .

Will leaf fans ever be happy.

All 3 are over paid by 1 mil

Lots of people sleeping on Lehtonen still for some reason. Him being the 7th D seems like such a waste.
l
I agree

Lehtonen is not coming to NA to be the 7 th dman

He and Bogo will be in the lineup opening night

Could see Holl being traded if after 10 games Lehtonen proves that he can play the right side and what he is doing in the khl is not a fluke .

Matthews isn't top 3 in the league yet. 11.634x5 is definite overpayment for where hes at right now. He should be worth it soon but the lack of term makes it a very hard contract to live up to.

Nylander was also overpaid quite decently, held put on the team for 2 months and played 1 year of his deal at a 3rd line level. His deal looks good in year 2.

Marners deal will look fair next year. Hes gonna be a 105-115 pt pace player. I seriously see him as a top 5 contender for the ross. Marner+Matthews are gonna terrorize the league
Matthews is a consistent 40, maybe become 50 Goals guy from day 1
He did not need to to adjust to the nhl.
His play has gotten stronger though but he’s a goal machine since he put on that jersey, only injuries kept his numbers back. Top 3 maybe, top 5 or 10 in the league for sure. And plays the hardest position

I think signing the QO makes sense for Dermott. Everyone wants to weigh as much as possible of their contracts away from the upcoming season. If Dermott wanted a $1.6m AAV, then he is better off going $875k this season, having a prove it year without waiver exemption, and then renegotiating with arb rights next year. If he signed this year multi year he may very well want to end up with close to $900k this year anyway while backloading the remainder of the contract.

matthews is 100% a 50 even 60 goal player. the only thing that is standing in his way that all the other 50-60 goal scorers got was legendary amounts of PP time. Matthews is almost there on a team that has legendarily low amounts of PP time year over year.

If he becomes a 115 point player, I'll eat crow.

Matthews and Marner both were overpaid the moment they signed that contract IMO.

Matthews should have been
9M x 5 years
10M x 6 years
11M x 7 years
12M x 8 years (yes less than McDavid but still 2nd highest paid AAV in the league)

Marner
7M x 5 years
8M x 6 years
9M x 7 years
10M x 8 years
Marner is a winger not a center, gets his points on assist NOT on goals

Both those contracts are ridiculous contracts. Nylander is fine but that contract isn't great; with the way he played first year of his contract (1 year down the drain); and the way he came in last season saying he is going to dominate the league (and didn't really... 2 years gone); hoping 3rd year is the charm.

If Nylander outscores Marner this season, people are gonna lose their minds and I am going to be here with my popcorn LOL

P.S. I am a Marner fan and I absolutely hate his contract
I would've done Mitchy by 3 years lowest Dubas could get until this kids fills out and matures a bit.. otherwise spot on

Glad we got Derms signed love the kid.

He plays 71% of all power plays, he gets lots of PP time.

Trade Holl.

Roster fits with him.

We need to keep our 7D until we know two things;
1. What Mikko Lehtonen is in the NHL
2. Can Travis Dermott make the switch to full time RD and successfully play top 4 minutes.

Until then, we need to keep Holl because we know he’s an NHL guy and we know he works on the second pairing with Muzzin (even if one doesn’t think he’s not ideal there, which may be true)

Assumming Lehtonen can transition to the NHL, I can see Dermott as our #7 dman, rotating in with Lehtonen and Bogo on the 3rd pair depending on the opposition. This, assumming he cannot beat Holl out of spot on the RHS (which I believe is a longshot).

Obviously we're beating a dead horse with this discussion, but even if Matthews gets 11.1 (to be the highest paid player on the team) on the same term and Marner gets 10.2 or 10.3 on the same term and Nylander gets 6.6... That money right there, combined with Justin Holl's 2.0 is the difference between getting a Weegar level defenseman in the 3.5 per year range to solidify an excellent top 4 of...

Reilly / Brodie
Muzzin / Weegar

That's my biggest issue. I'm not one of these people that had the pipe dream that these guys were all going to sign for 1-2 million less than they did, but a combined 1.2-1.4 million makes a HUGE difference in the long run, if allocated well.

What I'm curious is, has Marner been taking the foot off the 'offensive' gas-pedal because he couldn't trust the rest of his team? He can make some outstanding plays and scoring chances, but even he knows it can back-fire. And when that back-fire has to be covered by Ceci or Barrie for example... that's not a good situation.
I don't think so. I think he's the type of guy that will try to get a point no matter the consequences of a potential failure. But we will find out.
