Fleury? They couldn’t have back channeled a trade for his rights? Soon to be Campbell who is headed to Edmonton? Georgiev for scraps to the cup champs?
Fleury resigned with his current team. They could back channel all they wanted, but at the end of the day, the team wanted to keep him....and they did.

Edmonton is offering 5x5 at the very least according to most accounts. That's just ugly before the ink dries.

Georgiev's save percentage has dropped every year since his rookie season, so he's not any sort of upgrade, and cost significant assets to acquire.

There is no clear 'better option' off the table yet.

It would be honestly sort of shrewd if they flipped the picks they got today for Reimer - essentially locking in their tandem for next year without having to give up anything. If they've set the budget for goaltending at 7M for example - its not much dissimilar than getting Murray at 50% (no picks in the trade) + signing say, Samsonov or Comrie at 3M x 1

oh good god please don't bring back reimer ffs

I don't think it's based on cost, personally. But their limited cap space will impact who they can bring in so Murray could be the 1A because of who they can afford.
Exactly, maybe they bring in Blackwood or someone else with a little higher ceiling to play 1B but is cheap

Matt Murray clearly has an elite level to his game. There are brief flashes where he just dominates, and even the most ridiculous shots are being stopped, but that's the thing, brief.

You guys have rehabbed previous goalies, not impossible to do so with Murray, I think. I guess if I were a betting man I'd say no, though I get goosebumps at the thought of him enacting his revenge.

There's absolutely no way in hell Dubas rolls with Murray as the primary starter. I'm thinking he is going to be the backup to someone more superior. I think he'll snag another goalie.

You don't pay a backup $4.7m.

They'll hunt for a cost-efficient backup, and earmark Kallgren as their 3rd choice.

They aren't paying a ton of money for another big ticket goalie.

I think if the same deal was done at 50% retention I would be fine with it. I don't even care about the 2 draft picks, but maybe the Leafs ran the numbers and figured they didn't need the extra $1.6M x 2 years in cap space. But could be the difference in signing a player in FA.

What exactly makes Murray not a starter?

He put up .906 on the rebuilding Sens last year. The goalie Ottawa picked over him was on waivers 3 times in 2021. Goalies get hot and cold.

The 4.7m back up? Last year the Leafs spent 5.35m on goalies. We're already there this year on a guy Ottawa seemed desperate to get rid of.

I don't hate getting Murray. I just dislike the value.

NHL and NBA have 1 thing in common. Both have a dying breed of great goalies (brodeaur, hasek, etc) and great traditional big men.

First off, I think Murray is terrible... would love for him to prove me wrong.
Secondly, does he even play 20 games? This guy has been softer than Freddy by a long shot.
If this was the best solution, one of the big forwards should have been traded. We have zero chance imo, regardless of who our backup ends up being. Think of how good Jack was at the start, and the end of the season... now imagine a full season with bad Jack... do we even make the playoffs? Hope to fck this works out.

I don't think Murray is the solution, and I don't like this trade but...

Campbell's bad stretch went from about Jan 8 to Apr 14, where he had an abysmal .875 SV%. He was also hurt, so Mrazek and Kallgren both played and both had sub-.900 SV%.

And yet, in that time, the Leafs played at a 109 point pace that, over a full season, would have put them 1 point behind TB and 25 points ahead of the closest non-playoff team.

What they do in the playoffs will always be the big question, but if they went into the season with Kallgren/Woll as their tandem they would probably still make the playoffs.
