Funny enough for all his “troubles”last season

Murray had a .920 % up to his last 2 games of the season when they left him in the net for 8 goals

Exactly how do you get him for "way less'

You do know Ottawas financial situation don't you
Well first ideally, another goalie completely. That would be option 1

Option 2, if you absolutely need Murray, not sure how you don’t get them to retain 50%. Another 1.5M saved on the cap for 2 years is worth more than a 3rd+7th so screw the draft picks. Toronto should have forgone the draft picks and ask ottawa for more retention (whether that’s a full 25% more or even just 10-15% more, it would still be better than receiving late picks in future years)

One thing I remember about Murray was how bad his glove hand was. So many goals scored there on him.

Hopefully that's been improved.

He hasn't played 30 games for the last two seasons. You are worried about his glove hand?

I don't love this, but I'm not going to run Murray out of town until we see him play.

I think this is one of my issues with this deal. I'm not against Murray as a Leaf or this trade in general, however, Dubas had to have known the public backlash he and in turn Murray was going to get from the Leaf faithful. He's setting the poor guy up at the bottom of the hill. That's a steep hill to climb in Leafland.

The other issue I have is they still have to find a bargain on a competent backup. The goalie market if thin. Unless he's already got a move in his back pocket, Dubas may be in for a rude awakening. I mean I know you don't need world class goaltending to win the cup, but why take a gamble on a goalie that lost his game 3 years ago? 4+ million for Murray + another ~3 million for a 1b (which is what I think they're going to need). I'm truly baffled.

I'll reserve my outrage until the off season is done, but this is a head scratcher for sure...

i believe the tweet said he had a .920 in a 6 week span

Not the horse i'd have hitched my career wagon to.
This either surprises the masses or costs Dubas his job.
Better find a backup that can handle a heavy load.

There is a silver lining here and that is Leafs draft pick future took a turn in the right direction.

The Leafs had traded Nick Ritchie away with their 3rd in 2023, and they gave away their 7th next year to acquire Jared McCann before losing him in expansion,

This Murray trade essentially recovers those 2 previously lost draft picks allowing Leafs to break-even on those transactions as if they never occurred, with a 3rd and 7th returning to the fold as part of the salary retention on this deal. .
And you thought the good old days were gone for good.

Murray, 28, lost the starting net in Ottawa to Anton Forsberg last season and at one point cleared waivers and spent time in the AHL. The two-time Stanley Cup champion had a 5-12-2 record in 20 starts last season with a .906 save percentage, a slight improvement after two seasons of a save percentage below .900.

By joining the Maple Leafs, Murray will reunite with some familiar faces from his OHL days. Maple Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas and head coach Sheldon Keefe worked with Murray with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds nearly a decade ago and Leafs goalie evaluator and developer Jon Elkin has worked with Murray for many years.

"There are a lot of people who think Matt Murray still has the ability," Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said on the latest episode of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, citing sources who know Murray and others who don't. "They think that he has addressed some structural flaws that he has had in his game, in terms of moving side to side, that (people) think make him a better goaltender now."

"The biggest question that they have about Murray is, can he stay healthy?"

The move almost certainly means Jack Campbell will not be returning to the Maple Leafs net next season but more moves could be coming. After Petr Mrazek was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks last week, Erik Källgren is next in line in net for Toronto with Joseph Woll also in the organization.

I'm excited! Almost as much as when Eddie The Eagle signed.

Murray has had some serious injury/personal issues for a few years, on top of being traded to a hockey garbage pile.
But, his head's still in it, and he has shown some good signs while playing injured behind trash.

The main thing he gave the Penguins during their runs was a calming fire-extinguishing presence when defence broke down for periods (which happened a lot), as opposed to MAF's gasoline on a dumpster fire.

Go Matt go!

8 goals, you don't say. Can't wait for game 7

Yes. Playing. In the regular season is the same as the playoffs.

Matt Murray has won 2 cups. This isn’t the route I would have went without more retention.

But pretending Murray hasn’t performed I. The play off is he dumb

Well, there are specific ex-pro goalie led analytics like Clear Sight by Stephen Valiquette’s group and goalie communities like Kevin Woodley’s InGoal radio that deep dive on the minutia of the goalie position, talk shop and interview pros, nerd out on equipment.

So if one was truly interested in learning more about goalies with so much good content out there, why do we need generalists who call it voodoo because Cam Charron doesn’t get it?

Do Valiquette or Woodley have a history of picking goalies to have sustained success in the league?

Seriously did this guy not learn a anything from the Mrazek deal?? Murray is carrying a 4.7m cap hit.

Somebody tell me the plan is to put him on LTIR and we find a true #1.

Meanwhile, Dubas offers up 1st round picks like they are candy when we want to get rid of a contract.

I mean, trading a 1st and getting a 2nd isn’t trading a 1st full value.

That’s like saying, you paid $100 for your Big Mac, ignoring the $90 in change.

The 25 to 38 value in a weak 2022 draft is more or less the same value as a 3rd in a strong 2023 draft.

The frustrating part is taking on more cap, not the net difference in the 2 deals.

I think Murray can bounce back, and if he does, I’m more confident with him in net than Jack in the playoffs. Anything can happen. Definitely a bold move by Dubas. I thought we would get Murray at 50% retained. But I’ll rally and root for the kid.
Dubas couldnt get 50% so he settled at 25% (look at Dorion playing hard ball lol).

If Murray experiment failed at 50%, it wouldn't even matter as he will get roasted. Dubas pulled the trigger anyway.

This has to work.

Earlier someone posted a link to an analysis of Murray that didn't make him sound too bad. Unfortunately I clear history so cannot find it. Does anyone have the link so that they can post it here?

The team just set a franchise record for wins and points last season - I don't think you can look at the team he inherited and the team now and say its worse.

It's not worse. But it's not living up to its potential.

Got himself into cap hell immediately and every move he has made since has been with one hand tied behind his back.

Should’ve predicted the global pandemic. Surprised his spreadsheets didn’t pick up on it.
