Well better than giving up a boatload for Gibson.

I do like the picks as being better than nuthin', and I do like this better than 5x5 for Campbell.

The sky contrary to the recent clamor has not fallen, let's just take it easy, keep the flipping out to a minimum and see what they have by game 20.

More to come on the trade and UFA front. Can't wait!

Lol read the thread man.
It's typical for those 'haters' kind to not be able to read or understand.

That was about the 5th or 6th one to come into this thread exactly like that....so you have to question their comprehension.

Just curious, we’re people actually comfortable giving Campbell 5+ mill x 5 years?

Murray had better stats on a significantly worse team up until the last 2 games of a lost season.

Not to mention Campbell has his own injury concerns.

Why would anyone want to commit that much term to a mediocre goalie?

I understand hating this deal, but I don’t understand everyone who says “couldn’t we have just spent a little more to keep Campbell”
I'm glad the Leafs let Campbell walk.

I would much rather they do that than sign him long-term with a high AAV.

This is a short-term deal. That is much better.

Stavros was also the guy that refused to sign the greatest hockey player of all time since he questioned the profit margin of doing so, though.
I heard that 99 demanded part of the Leafs as part of his contract. Stavros rightly said no.

I guess the lure of playing in Canada and being close to his Mom and Dad wasn't enough for Gretz.

He then signed for less with the Rangers.

By the way Orr was the best player ever. (another f*** up by the Leafs, they could have signed him)

I think this is an awful move. But signing Campbell back for 5+ Million for 4+ years would have been a much bigger disaster. He played terribly for most of the year, and in my opinion, he will never be a guy that wins anything. Gets too high and too low. I genuinely question his mental stability.

Would rather have exhausted the trade market for a better option.

We have placed the future of this franchise in the hands of Matt Murray

God help us and provide a miracle. Get him back to form

Lehner was good in OTT + BUF FWIW - or at least had good years.

Read the quoted tweet "a goalies past sv pct has almost no correlation to future sv pct" - hence: voodoo.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but the general analytics community could do well staying out of the goalie lane and let the specialists speak for the position in detail on various subjects related to being a goalie, watching goalies and analyzing goalies.

I don’t play the position but am a fan of it and it’s just very educational to hear goalies talk about the position than to get drawn into the old correlation causation predictive model talk.

No way Dubas would have made this trade if his job wasn’t on the line.

Desperation. I hope the board is watching closely.

I don’t get that sense.

In fact, a safer target with long term or selling futures to acquire is more desperate than a huge gamble to keep term down and maintain long term flexibility.

Why would he care about not committing a lot of money or term if he doesn’t plan to be here to see it through?

It's been a couple hours and I'm angry again.

What a dreadful deal. Absolutely ridiculous on many levels (not enough retention AND really poor value add ons). Nevermind the fact Murray stinks in the first place, it's just a full on dumpster fire of a trade.

Lehner was hurt and pushed through despite needing a surgery that he eventually ended the season for. The issue with stats is that they lack context on occasion

Then read the second tweet in there. The first tweet is just an example of the results of reviewing the first trend.

Past save percentage has almost no correlation to future save percentage. That takes all the stats, context and without - plots them on a graph to see their correlation year to year. There is a very limited relationship - hence, goaltending is voodoo.

There are a handfull of goalies that are good year to year. After that - its an absolute crapshoot.

He's overpaid until he wins you a cup. Then he's a steal. Either way, we retain salary. So the Leafs are getting a slight discount. When he played for us last year, he played well even though our defence was at times porous. I hope he remains healthy for you guys. I wouldn't count him out just yet. Remember, he chose to go to Toronto.
That’s totally the wrong way to look at…he could have been had for way less and the risk is high. It’s not impossible that he turns back the clock and wins the leafs a cup but it still doesn’t make it a good bet

It’s like in poker going all in or raising with a bad hand. You might get lucky on the river card and it all works out but it doesn’t make it a good bet. Odds are against you

Kadri winning the cup and publicly telling people who didn't believe in him to kiss his arse affected dubas quite a bit I guess
While Naz's words were partly for Kyle, they were mostly for the contigent of LeaFlanders who couldn't just STFU with all the negative vitriol they threw at him. Frankly I don't blame him, same goes for when they finally run MM out of town and the words he'll have for them.

Dismissing all data except for 'opinions' and 'eye test'.

At least no one can lose an argument by taking objectivity off the table I guess
