This is our version of Tampa's Boyle so to speak. You can't be one dimensional as a team.

Yeah you're right you can't... oh... wait... Pittsburgh won the cup. So yeah. Matt Martin is a waste of space, time and money it today's game. But I'm sure Lou understands that. It's not like he is old and out of touch

Leafs would NEVER sign Weise, Orr, Clune, Tom Wilso, etc to this same contract. M.Martin is the perfect 4th liner (Great defensively, decent possession wise, agitator/hitter/fighter).
Weise does not belong with those players (including Martin). Much better player than all listed.

They're all 4th liners, which is what I meant. I would take Martin over any of those players. Weise is 2nd on that list, but Martin's still the better player.

While I won't disagree with you who you would rather have. I will disagree that Weise is a much better player. I agree with the poster you replied to, I actually do not see them as comparables. Weise can play effectively on the 3rd line. And he is not really an enforcer where he would be one of the leaders in the NHL in fights. Really comparing apples to oranges here.

As much as I hate to admit it, good signing (though I'd have preferred shorter term - but I'd have preferred shorter term with the bulk of the contracts handed out today).

Oh noes! The Leafs overpaid by $0.5M for a few years where the cap isn't an issue! Whatever will they do!!! :jump:

It's like posters here haven't watched hockey before. Good luck winning without some grit guys. And if he makes Marner and Nylander feel more safe and play with more confidence, he's earned his worth.

And Brandon Prust? Last I checked, Prust wasn't a 6'3, 220 ibs perennial league leader in hits.

He's 27, he'll be fine. If he was in his 30s I'd agree with you, but for now, I don't.

How old was Colton Orr when signed?

Sure, he's 27, but a lot of guys with the Matt Martin type of skill set can flame out pretty quick / suddenly, especially with the security of a $10m deal.

This has almost as many replies as Radulov's return to the NHL. All hail Matt Martin.

To be fair Colton orr was probably suffering multiple undisclosed concussion ever year from the time he was 16.

And why do people talk as if Orr's contract was some kind of anchor when it never affected anything.

Martin is a better player than Orr ever was though.. The only comparable between the two is they played for the Leafs at some point, so I'm not sure why you're using him as an example. Not to mention, was Orr's contract ever considered an anchor? Lol, no..

Orr the player was much more of an anchor than his contract ever was.

I'd have welcomed this with open arms on my team...oh well...minor win for the leafs in my book. teams will have to play against Martin, Komarov, Kadri every game...thats sure to get annoying as well. Then again I remember when the Sabres thought icing Kaleta and Ott would build a winner...eh, still like it for the leafs...

Martin isn't going to embarrass himself a la Clarkson. He has a limited skill set, but he works his ass off to contribute. The Leafs are getting a 4th liner with character and leadership. Also, he does great work in the community. For a developing team like Toronto, I couldn't recommend him more. If he just keeps up his numbers, he'll be a fan favorite in Toronto in no time.

This is hilarious, the Leafs have had a fantastic off season and other teams fans can't stand it so they **** all over this signing because they can't admit it is just the latest in a series of good moves.

Fact is

OUT
Cowen
Harrington

IN
Mathews
Andersen
Zaitsev
Rychel
Martin

Makes the Leafs MILES better than last season and some can't accept that since they are so used to the Leafs being a disaster but we are on the upswing now and some are in denial.

I don't mind the AAV but the term should be cut in half. Signing 4th liners to 4 year deals is foolish. But whatever, it's unlikely to cause huge problems. Worst case, he's in the AHL eating $1.55 million of cap. Still don't like it, obviously.

This was the old school part of the management team (Babs, Lou) pushing for their guy.

This is why I don't get why people call it a bad deal. Kessel eats up almost as much of that, on a longer term than this guy (if Martin becomes unproductive)... and he will never again play for the team.
