I dont get the hate for this signing

2.5 mil cap hit ,

and whats the total Cap , and whats 2.5 to that ?

4 years , who do the leafs need to sign?, The leafs are re-building , most of the good leafs players will be on ELC , (Kradi & Reilly have been signed)

MM , Greening , BL , Bernier, coming off the cap

I honestly don't the see the problem with this signing

Probably 500k too much, but let's be real, that wont make or break the Maple Leaf's, hes a solid player and surprisingly durable for how many hits he like's to dish out.

Solid pickup for them.

This is an okay deal to improve our fourth line. No more deals, though. Let's go with what we've got, win a few more games, and still get a good draft pick. Steady as she goes.

Well they were unable to get their native son in Stamkos. Martin is from Windsor, Ontario so I guess it makes up for missing out on Stammer.

So were Orr and Clarkson. You may want to imply this is the case, but look at their draft this year. A lot of focus on Size and the one signing to date is added testosterone and truculence to quote 1 former GM.

Martin can actually play. He's not a liability at all defensively. How about taking a look at what the Leafs have done in recent history(Marner,Nylander,Kapanen etc etc), there's not much at all to point to to believe they're going back to the Brian Burke era. It doesn't matter though, because the Leafs can never win in the public domain. They're too small. That lineup will get crushed. They'll never win a cup with a team like that. The Leafs add size in the draft and sign one player? they're back to the same old same old. Typical Leafs right?

Meh, Leafs have more than that in bad contracts they took. Worked out with Komarov, so let's see.

Really like the signing, I think he's going to play up to the contract and the intangibles he'll bring is exactly the kind of guy the leafs need and every team would love to have.

I was hoping the leafs would be quiet today and said if they made any move that it'd be for Martin. Very pleased.

The real problem with this deal isn't the $2.5m, it's the 4 years.

Martin is a guy who needs to work harder than just about anyone else on the ice to contribute, and doesn't play a style that ages particularly well.

It's harsh, but these guys simply don't deserve the type of job security that goes with a long term deal.

He's 27, he'll be fine. If he was in his 30s I'd agree with you, but for now, I don't.

You have to wonder how much age is added by leading the league in hits 5 straight years. We all love the player, but when does that cliff approach?

Generally, it's the injuries that come with such a style of play that causes players to fall off. Martin hasn't dealt with injuries as far as I know, so I'm quite confident he can maintain his pace for four more years.

Martin completely breaks down in 1/2 years:

Send him to the minors and have a 1.575mil cap hit on the books for 3/2 years
Buy him out and take a massive 833k cap hit for 6/4 years.
LTIR island with Lupul and Robidas

I don't see the risk here

This is a Good post Seanlinden. I agree. He's a 4th line player that got a lot of security in 2.5M x 4 years. This is just about the max money you want to give to a player that plays 10 mins a game. To use an example Winnik a useful 3rd line winger last year that also kills PIMS made only 2.25M per. There will be a lot of noise in this thread by some that take offence if one does not agree this was a good usage of dollars. But it looks like the Leafs overpayed for intangibles.

Maybe a little but so what..they have tons of cap and tons of money and having someone who can stand up for guys like Marner is worth something.
