As an Isles fan I am furious that they didn't sign Martin to this very reasonable contract. He's a hitting machine, is a decent fighter, can skate and take a regular shift, PK in a pinch, and pitch in some offense. He's also in his prime and may develop into a better offensive and penalty killing player under a real NHL coaching staff. Great signing for the leafs

All true, but Chimera is an upgrade on the ice.

To play devils advocate here.. If we bumped the Komarov extension thread it was the same comments. Lots of them calling him over paid and how they would regret it. I would say he's underpaid now.

At the end of the day, it's 2.5M. It's an easily tradeable contract, especially if he plays well for 2 years and then we move him to another team with 2 years left. OR we leave him exposed on the expansion draft(s). Or, we send him down to the Marlies, they get a top line forward with grit and the leafs only pay him 1.something I believe.

Regardless, its a 4th liner. If the leafs can't contend due to 2.5 M in cap space, the rebuild failed already. This signing won't stop us from locking in our core and key support players.

yes, but only for a year or two at best... At the end of Chimera's contract he will be 39 and Martin will be 30. There is a chance Chimera falls off a cliff as soon as this season. Martin will most likely be a useful player for the duration of his contract.

I'm also very curious to see if Toronto can develop him to be more than the Isles cracker jack coaching staff were capable of.

If Mike Babcock thought the leafs were getting bullied on the ice last season then they need to address the issue and get tougher.

Martin fills that short term need until the kids can gain confidence and strength.

The happiest leafs today are Matthews, Nylander, Brown and Marner.

Because of one bad deal and because they didn't draft the kids you wanted? That is a poor reason to change your thinking.

The draft was fine.

The problem is giving term to 4th liners. A mistake this organization makes over and over.

They were also rumoured to be in on Russell which is another terrible sign, if it's true.

Bad deal. Overpay and too much term.

Starting to think Leafs management is very over rated.

It's fans like you why home town kids don't want to play here. Not even 3rd and 4th liners. You just saw a Islanders fan say above he wished they kept him at this reasonable contract. Go away.

Liked the Lucic signing LOL

Lucic contract actually makes sense. Power forward that is actually good at hockey who is a top line player. Anytime you pay your 4th liner 2.5 million you've made a huge mistake.

Couldn't care less about home town kids.

I'd rather have a winning team personally.

I still can't believe all the ******** over a 2.5 million dollar contract over 4 years.

I'm not going to judge the deal until I see how everything plays out, and if he becomes a fan favourite I doubt people would care.

Lucic is in buyout territory in 4 years. Calling it now.

Hate it. Two years and $.5M too much.

He's good defensively, great shot suppression, and of course he has intangibles :)rolleyes:), but he's a fourth line guy and that's way too much for a fourth line guy.

if approx. 50%of your top 9 are making ELC money, how does it matter?

And in 2 years, they'll get a different guy. 4th liners are easily replaceable.

The Martin you see now is max developed. There's nothing more there. That cracker jack coaching staff actually turned this low skill guy into a real hockey player.
