It’s not a bad deal since it starts with a 7 not an 8, but a lot of people in this thread seem to be under the misinterpretation that Rielly is a #1dman.

With his defense he definitely isn’t. Very good offensive top pair guy tho.

This seems like a fair deal in a vacuum. Good on Dubas for not getting completely bent over by one of his homegrown guys

It's a great deal. True number one defensemen make 9m+.

Not a Toronto fan but I love this for them. I saw some fans talking about potentially losing him but honestly I think they would be surprised how the team looks without him. feel like he took a bit of a pay cut but not surprising he seems to like Toronto

Id much rather pay Mo 7.5m over both Jones and Werenski at 9.5m. Now just have to trade Marner lol

On one hand, it doesn’t start with 8 or 9.
On the other hand, Pulock and Pelech got less for the same term and they play real solid defense.
If Mo can play a bit of a tighter gap and get shots through a little better that would make a big difference…oh well. He seems like he trains really hard and is a really good person and probably would make a good C. Hope his skating doesn’t fall off too quickly

Not sure what they were supposed to do, let him walk? He's their #1 d-man that plays in all situations.

Sure he has his warts, but who exactly is going to take all the minutes he plays if he was gone?

exactly. With Brodie, we finally have a decent number 1 pairing signed for the next three years (including this one). if we let him walk, we would have been absolutely screwed considering the market for free agent defencemen next year is crap

That's probably as team friendly a deal as you're gonna get in the current market. I'm guessing Reilly's agent saw some of the earlier buyers remorse on guys like Seth Jones, and considering Reilly doesn't exactly seem to be lighting the lamp this year it makes sense to take the safe money.

In regards to the team, outside of Jack Campbell needing a contract our core is pretty much locked in for at least three years. Not much left for Dubas to do but see how it plays out.
