As a very basic example, look at what a positional sacrifice is in chess. Sometimes a long term edge is worth giving up a short term advantage if the opponent won’t be able to properly take advantage.

I would guess that its because Kappy has mostly been 3rd line for us this season and he actually does carry value (despite what HF says) so he would be a major piece to dangle for a positional upgrade on the backend.
Just a guess though, no idea if this has anythign to do with that.

What is odd...is that Florida has so many Dmen 2 have been playing forward.....and they go and trade a NHL forward for a AHL forward.

That's not logical. If someone was offering something greater than Marchment, why would they trade him to Toronto?
Right now, Malgin is a skilled tweener. Florida probably did not want to lose two forwards in a week. Toronto probably was the only team offering them a waiver exempt forward for Malgin.
If they don't think Malgin is an every day NHLer, then there is no real consequence to trading him to Toronto.

based off prior moves, particularly the Bobrovsky signing, I think it's safe to say Dale Tallon's IQ is very low.

Malgin isn't an NHL player either. Says a lot that he's scratched for defence turned forward every day

Marchment has played four games with the Leafs this year. It's not like he was really making them any tougher (or better) this year because he isn't even an everyday player.

Sometimes it's about fit. For the Leafs, it is a deal that only has upside. It's a smart deal by Dubas and I have had n issue criticizing him in the past.
So he’ll fit nicely with Toronto!
...only question is, hows his Corsi?
In a vacuum this isn’t even bad. Marchment isn’t very good, but Malgin is one of the last players the Leafs need right now.
Malgin is better than marchment, but this doesn't move the needle much in terms of forward needs. Very meh deal all around.

Nobody else offered anything of any value, probably. At the end of the day, you need to do what makes your team better first and worry about other teams later.
