Well, we are about to go get slaughtered by a very good Jets team who are on a three game losing streak who are going to Come out very hungry for a win. The Blues are going to be moving all forward lines and the top two defensive pairing around. We are gonna get our first taste of the BroRayko (patent pending) pairing. And Texier is scratched. Monty says no Buchy, but he may be a player in Calgary.

I'm glad we're finally moving Suter down the lineup. He looked great in his first 1-2 weeks with Parayko, but his play has fallen off a cliff since. He was the third or fourth worst D-man by cumulative gamescore in the month of November, and the eye test confirms that ranking. Last game, the second goal allowed to Philly was due to him making a terrible outlet pass while under zero pressure directly into Saad's skates.

I don't understand why we keep trying Saad with Thomas. Saad is a super weird player, he gets almost zero positive impact from playing with more talented players, but then he also gets almost zero negative impact from playing with less talented players. The dude is one-of-a-kind when it comes to the way he produces offense. I'd rather we give Holloway or Bolduc some time on Thomas' wing, probably Holloway atm as he has the hot hand with 3 goals in his last 2 or whatever it is.

Edit - Source on that Gamescore thing:

It’s amazing how the emergence of one defenseman can change how a defensive group functions. Like when Forsling emerged for Florida. It filters downstream and just makes the whole unit look better. Hopefully he keeps it up and then the same thing happens next year to the offense when Dvorsky does the same thing to Schenn that Broberg effectively has done to Krug. Suddenly you have a team.

Got a chance to steal one from a good team here. The Jets are in the midst of a 13 game stretch where they have 11 games on the road. This is a home game but it's essentially another road game because they're right back on the road again for their next contest.

Gotta imagine all that travel will have an affect on them tonight.

Blues win, 3-2 (OT).

I don't think Suter has been nearly as bad as the narrative and I'd confidently wager that at least 50% of the D men in the NHL would 'play like the worst D man in the league' in the role he played this month. Once again, Parayko and his partner have the hardest deployment in the league. Suter is not good enough to do that job effectively. No one thought he was. But neither are the large majority of NHL D men.

In the month of November, Suter played 24:30 a night of pure defensive minutes.

His 21:45 a night at even strength was 5th most among all D men in the NHL in the month of November (Parayko was 4th). They slide up to 3rd and 4th if you remove Dunn who played exactly one game in November. His O zone start rate was 42% and the Parayko pair went out against by far the highest quality of competition on the team.

He was there by necessity because our other 2 every day LHD were hurt. Frankly, I thought he did perfectly fine. I'm extremely happy that Broberg is back and the 4 minute drop in minutes during Broberg's first game back suggests that the staff more than recognizes Suter's limitations.

But I find the 'he is complete trash and anyone would be better' takes pretty off base because most of the NHL D men people think are fine would also be a disaster in that role.

I think that gamescore and every other advanced metric is about as useful for evaluating D men playing big shut down minutes as GAA is for evaluating goalies on teams that give up 35+ shots a night.

We're 2-0-1 under a new coach who is generally thought of as a good NHL coach and Broberg's return from injury changes the look of the D from what we've been seeing most of the last few weeks.

I'm not running to put money on the Blues, but I'm not considering any opponent a locked-in loss until we at least lose a game in regulation under Monty. Winnipeg is a better team than us, but it isn't just a 3 game skid. They went 3-3 in the 6 games leading up to that 3 game skid. That is a 3-6 record since starting the year 15-1.

Anyway, 5-2 Jets.

expecting to find out the jets are definitely better than us, but they've been leaving skid marks for the past few games, so maybe they'll poop their pants again

nice to see hofer get some of these tougher assignments

I never said Suter was trash, I said his play fell off a cliff, which it did. That's 100% not his fault at all, it's the Blues fault for creating a D-core that can't seem to figure out how to get anyone other then Parayko to play reasonable D, even though we pay Faulk like a top pairing D and he can't seem to handle fairly sheltered minutes without getting caved in. (Krug too before he was hurt).
