Kane has more hardware than Matthews and was the best player in the league for a short period. Those talks are also closed. Matthews is at best the fourth best forward. Even by pace he was 17th in the league in scoring last year which most top 3 players don't have seasons like that. Even if you count the past three seasons, which includes the two best of Matthews' career, he is 6th in scoring and 5th in pace.
Expect the gap to close on his 26 year old season.

Should be talking about it now. Beyond obvious it's happening.

If Arizona weren't playing in a college arena and a complete disaster of a team he probably would be walking next summer to go there.

Makes sense for him to spend the next 4 years on a potential contender and go down south in his 30s for the remainder of his career.
Yeah it's obvious that players go to their childhood/hometown teams every time. Was Mcdavid from Ontario tho? So he's going to Toronto in 3 years, right?

I would rather be a rebuilding team than overpay a premadonna an amount he doesn’t deserve. Mark my words he and the TML will win nothing so long as we have him on the team. I would trade him one goal behind Sundin’s all
Time TML goal record just to ensure he has no legacy here.

Start moving this group out and start the rebuild!!
interesting. So you’d rather go into a re-build that could take anywhere from 5-15 years than overpay your number 1 centre? We’re you a fan of Toronto between 2005 and when matthews showed up?

15.9% of the cap% is more than fair, if not a discount. Everyone gets fixed on the number and not the cap%. This deal has nothing to do with deals signed between 17-21.
Ehhh. Back when Crosby and Malkin were taking their deals all jealous fans wanted to do was say. " That's too much" they are never going to build a team with that money locked into 2 guys.

Pages and pages of doubters.

The rest is history

For the 1st time ever... Nick. Kypreos. Was. Right. Shocking.

Geez, with some of the posters ripping Matthews, he might be underrated. They're dumber than the folks a couple years ago saying he's on par with McDavid and about to score 70 every year.

Matthews has disappointed a bit in the playoffs, but not too bad. He's passed the eye test, but it's harder to score on good teams. Albeit, he hasn't been great in elimination games. He could improve, but doesn't seem to have another gear. But I wouldn't call him a choker, he's been adequate.

John Tavares is the Leaf player who has been a total playoff choker, his numbers are awful.
Rather laughable in all aspects.

Matthews is not close to top 3, nor is he "much better" than Pastrna
How many years till these smart people start talking about him going to Arizona Kings again?

AAV is kinda high tho, MacKinnon and pasta signed wayyy better contacts for team considering Mack is better and pasta might be just as good
Mack is similar but he’s very clearly a more highly valued asset than Pasta given Position , age , better 2 way ability , slightly better goal scoring etc

Cap hit is fine. Term is abysmal for the team, but great for Matthews. In four years, the cap should be 100M+ and and he can likely sign a 16M+ contract then, which is smart thinking on his part.

On the surface, the AAV and term are disappointing, but that is 100% Kyle Dubas' fault.

Treliving inherited a situation wherein he literally had zero leverage. Under the circumstances, I think he did as well as can be expected.
The worst thing is Dubas and Shannahan built the team in such a manner that there’s no pressure to win. They can just play, make some money and go home.

The AAV is more than reasonable. The term just puts the Leafs in a real awkward position when this contract is up. Someone is going to have to sign Matthews to a bad contract then, and he will be good enough at 30/31 to make it hard to say no.

WPG has a similar but different issue with Schieffle. Everyone knows his next contract will be a disaster, but he is still good now. MS isn’t near the same level and he seems to be making the choice of what to do next for WPG. Toronto likely won’t have that luxury. These contracts that take people to the end of the on average prime years are super awkward.

But for the next four years it’s good news for Leafs fans at a fair rate given his production and position.

As a Bruins fan, it certainly makes me way happier about Pasta’s deal, tho.

The nice thing is he's only up $1.55M from his last salary so as much as he's overpaid, it will only break the leafs a little.

As expected, everybody knew that Matthews was going to get paid.

Big risk... injury history... surprised he didn't take the money... either way, actually like it for Leafs.. 5 year window to go all in and then rebuild if needed...

Perfect deal for both player and team

Toronto gets all of Matthews “best years” and can sell high if he starts to decline

Matthews can still cash in if he remains a top tier player after this contract

The problem is you never get any discounts. Hard to win the cup when they want $ and they don't care about the team.

Oh no so our worst case scenario is we have the league’s premier goal scorer for the entirety of his prime then get assets back in a sign and trade when he enters his 30s.

Damn that’s such a bad position to be in
Don’t get your panties in a knot, just explaining to you , how it will unfold. Relax dude.

It didnt close after his 25 year old season.
I mean of course the Nate fans going to come in and protect his guy. End of the day they are all very similar players outside of Mcdavid and each one of the top 3-4 guys can take it any year.

I mean if you want to fight for your guy as the 2 or 3 guy so be it.

My point still stands he's a stud and a top player in the LEAGUE
