How does a deal even get that low? Does Dubas start the negotiations like, “we’d love to have you back, how does league minimum sound?”

I'd guess...

He is 38 now, he will be 39 by the time the season starts. His family is in Toronto, he just wants to settle down instead of moving around. I don't think given his age he would have gotten any more on the open market; and he would have had to move, rent the freakin' house, find school for his kids, etc....

I think it is more Gio saying I'd be willing to play for close to a league minimum, and staying close to extended family and settle down and then walk into the sunset in couple years.

And Spezza and Simmonds and who else?

Except Tavares (huge hometown discount lol), all their pajama boyz are in the twilight of their careers...

Even Montreal doesnt go that low to try to appeal to the "homeboy" factor to build sympathy for the team
Briere, Parenteau, Brisebois....

Because the Leafs are a contender, despite the playoff results, because when you finish top 5 in the NHL you are a contender and players will take deals to play for a contender

Yeahno, contenders tend to win a round once in awhile.

He just wants to go home to Toronto in his old age...

Great signing. They were paying Kessel $1,200.000 per year. He's off the book this year. Gio just a bit more for two years. I like it! Good signing Dufus!

COVID clearly changed the perspective of these veteran players who are gladly signing minimum contracts in exchange for job security.

Similar to Spezza and Simmonds, they just need more players in their prime to want to play with them. The only one off the top of my head is Tavares in recent years.
May be late to the party but you missed Bunting. That deal was even a bigger bargain for Dubas.

Honestly surprised he's coming back at what's gonna be barely above league minimum but I'll gladly take that.

He has made his money, he is really taking the hometown discount so the team can spend elsewhere.

Gio isn't the player he once was but at 800k per season he is a steal.

I bet Toronto is just going to build their team with ageing NHL Veterans at some point willing to take in a low contract. Mostly from Toronto.
