Pretty great contract from dubas and I can’t stand the leafs. 800k makes it so if he does fall of a cliff due to age then it hardly affects them. Great signing and he still has a bit left in the tank. sure you could say that they’d be better off with someone younger in the top 4 but the reality is they don’t have the money.

How does a deal even get that low? Does Dubas start the negotiations like, “we’d love to have you back, how does league minimum sound?”
I think it starts with an outright: ‘we’d love to have you back, but, we can’t afford you, unless _______’

You can't bury 35+ contracts at all. Even in the minors you have the full cap hit. In the second year you can get 100,000 of relief by burying the contract, as it can only be done to years 2 or later into a 35+ contract.
You are correct. But I don't think they would have trouble moving that contract for a very low pick if it came to that. There are better players of course, but for 800k for a player they watched play last year and obviously liked it's good.

Wow, he probably left millions on the table
I think he could have probably got at least double what he ended up getting. It's not like a Matthews type of player signing for 6 million of course but they gotta try and squeeze every cent they can.

He could have taken a bonus heavy contract and probably earned $3-4m based on his recent play.

That's a shock. Speculation was around $3M per wasn't it?

Thanks to Mark Giordano for putting the club first.

The guy is going to turn 39 around the time next season starts. I don't think he's leaving that much money on the table.
I think a few teams would have offered him a 2-2.5 million AAV on a 1-2 year deal. For most of us, that's a lot of money to leave on the table.

It's all relative I guess.

Nothing wrong with that. Solid bottom pair D who can fill in top 4 when needed.

Wonder why the Leafs can’t seem to find success with so many home town guys taking such big discounts to play for them

I don't understand how this can be spun into a negative for the Leafs.
It's a continuing issue of, do they think that's really good enough?

If he looks good still, do you say he is still solidifying the top 4 and don't need to add, but will that hold up well enough in the playoffs?

It can go negative if having an old Gio nfluences their choices to not improve their D more.

Wow! Now that is a player who is determined to help his team win. I don't think I can remember any player signing a contract like this before.

Wouldnt surprise me if Shanahan bribed him with a front office position after he retires for taking this discount. It’s against the rules if directly offer it but if you just say something like “ We see you having a bright future in our organization even after retirement but due to our cap constraints we can only afford to pay you this much”. Can’t get in any trouble for saying that.

Seems good. Not a Leafs fan but happy Gio gets to play at home and with his buddy Brodie. He may be old but was consistently the fittest Flame coming into training camp. Not as many miles as a typical late thirties player either.

Thought the Pajama boy supply was running low after Thornton and Spezza failed to bring a Cup. Now he comes Gio.

Leafs just sealed their fate for another 2 years. Hockey gods won’t let piece of shit like Gio win anything close to a Cup.
