Hunt sucks but I imagine there's something else at play here..they've either got something else lined up or they want to give another guy internally a chance (Steeves is a good candidate for example)
Man I hope that Steeves gets a chance

Not that Malgin had much value but still wierd trade. At least Hunter adds physical play and defence so thats something.
All though something tells me unlike the Timmins trade, we aren't winning this one
We won already !
This guy is bigger , hits and fights on occasion
Ohhhh almost forgot
We egging got rid of a mentally weak , physically weak tiny player that produced zilch !!!!

I just find it odd that Malgin is somehow held up as being representative of the Dubas project, while Dryden Hunt is some off brand non Dubas type meant to appease a certain caricatured part of the fanbase. Both guys are Dubas guys and shouldn’t really be too symbolic of anything beyond being different flavours but otherwise being pretty low in the lineup players.
I think what might have happened is that Sakic no matter how hard he tried couldn't find a 5'6" 153pounder in his system, so instead resorted to offering his only sub 200 pound guy. Nothing really to do with any sociological divisions that exist in western society.

That said little guys do not beat big guys with any regularity in physical contests. It's just one of those things.

A depth guy who has to get some games to show his chops. Under the radar pick ups on a winning team can motivate the team to understand "as GM, we are always looking to improve". Anyone know the waiver rules for a guy already waived in one season?

He won't be a defensive liability and he forechecks. A heavier forecheck on their depth lines is essential for this teams playoff fortune. If they can find such players with size who also hit, it can be a game changer (keep looking Kyle). Defense alone won't suffice, they need a guy who can pin pucks/cycle until their top lines comes on fresh and/or, take up space around opposition nets if they aren't a physical force.

I do find a couple of tidbits interesting for those of us who apply our own qualitative view beyond advanced stats:

1) He scored a tonne of goals in the WHL, league which has the most physical play, certainly on the backend, so I'd love to see the manner in which he scored there. Probably plenty of goals around the net I might safely assumed.

2) He was undrafted, meaning he is always on the bubble and used to adversity. If you can get such players to stick, they are gems.

People dismissed pickups such as Perry, an older guy who doesn't have much pace. When his back is against the wall in a playoff series though, he is a Gamer who will sacrifice it all to win.

Hopefully this guy is a Gamer. We need more of them.

Meh.

I actually liked what Malgin brought to the bottom 6 but Keefe obviously didn't and so he'll get his shot to stick in the NHL elsewhere.

Don't know much about Hunt but at first glance, he seems like more of what we already have. I probably would've preferred a pick, tbh.

This sub forum is so unlikeable. Nothing Dubas does happens without complaints. This is a nothing burger trade that got 8 pages of ppl complaining. Get lives people it's a week before Christmas
He turns into Justin Holl in the game threads

Leafs forums are so full of satire, irony and both intentional and unintentional comedy that while never quaint, is oft times charming.

I heard you can actually fit 17 Malgins into one clown car, but that claim may be just a vicious rumour.

Aside from the Anaheim game, the bottom 6 has been nearly invisible.

This move just frees up room for the youth to come in and add some offensive pop.

Malign has flashes where you think wow he could be something but he has not been able to finish. There is a small chance he could turn into a decent player but I’d rather give the youth a chance. Not like Malgin had added any offence to be missed.

He's the grit dubas is apparently afraid of adding to this team.
He might be the president of the can't score team but since Kampf got here, his numbers have jumped

Was funny reading some posters attempt to serve crow after Malgin locked down a 12/13th forward spot.

This was inevitable. Guys like Malgin look hot in the pre-season, but don't dress in the playoffs. Most saw this coming.

Unfortunate that we had to trade a guy like Marchment for "skill", only to trade that skill for a replacement level checker. All over the place.

Not really it just happened at different sides of Dubas gaining experience. When he came in he made a lot of meh deals because he thought you could win a cup having a 4th more skilled than other teams 3rd lines. That failed when he learned how the NHL works in the playoffs and has corrected this every season since but the repuation follows.

He's been slow to adapt to this approach IMO. I believe he is comfortable in the known rather than the unknown. I like Kerfoot too, he's a pro player. I see what some see in the potential of Engvall. After too many seasons of regular season heroes, it's time Dubas realizes that to win a Cup look at the %'s of playoff team structures who succeed, especially in the East. Don't reinvent the wheel

You need hitters, forecheckers, muckers, net drivers.. Guys who stand up and are counted and will stand up for others. Guys who want to win at all costs and others feed off of it. He's done well on the backend, players like Muzzin, Gio, Benn, Bogosian, but the front lines haven't been difficult enough. We've had Foligno and Ritchie, both gone for various reasons.

Above all of these you need the talented guys of course. The hard part is in place. I'd happily take six bottom guys who play resposibly, who saw off on the scoresheet or get the better once in awhile but they are hard nosed, tenacious and relentless on the puck and the body. It pays dividends, night in and out and especially in the playoffs. They set up success for the star players and remain in the thoughts of the opposition. Plain and simple.

Okay trading Malgin I suppose, but the return is something we don’t need. Our bottom six needs additions to pitch in, this guy bring absolutely none of that. Sure bigger, tougher than Malgin, but he was never a bottom six fit, so I’m just looking a this guy and he looks like a plug we put on waivers earlier.

Looks a mostly useless move really.

Next.

Not sure how much more of a look or opportunity they could give Malgin.. and with Jarnkrok coming back they probably did him a solid to try to find a job elsewhere. Clearly they don’t see him as a long term fit going forward so they added defensive depth that could clear waivers and be a potential call up.
If Dubas comes back next season, then Malgin will too.

"We can and we will" 24-7 365 days a year for Malgin.

Key to the city too!

;)
