Confirmed with Link: [TOR/CBJ] TOR acquire Riley Nash for Conditional. 7th Pick in 2022

Since Andersen on the LTIR means he's done, I wonder if we scoop up Merzlinkins along with Foligno. He's expansion exempt as well, so we could still expose Hutchinson.

Andersen was placed on LTIR retroactively, which means he is not done. He can probably be re-activated as early as tomorrow because he's already been out for something like over a week.

Dubas has gotten a good look at Nash in the playoffs when he was with the Bruins and Jackets as he was on those teams for a couple of the Leafs' first round exits. Definitely sees some value in him as a depth player.

Basically any excuse you can get to bring up the Leafs playoff failures, eh Bert?

Leafs had center depth but now they have that shutdown center depth with Engvall-Kerfoot-Nash, perfect.
Whaaaaaaaat ? Theeeeeeee ? Phuqque ?
I just died a little inside ....this cannot be unseen again , you’ve blinded me ..
I’m more afraid of playing my daughters U 12 soccer team , and they are way tougher in the playoffs

He is not "what the club was missing" but the price is right and a healthy Nash is a solid 4th line guy. Much lower risk than a random AHL forward and he has a little upside as Columbus didn't use him the same way Boston did. I love that "nothing happens on the ice for either team"

Off topic, but one of the funniest posts i read today was in the Canucks forum in which Benning was blamed for the covid outbreak due to eating a bat.
Benning and O Dog look like they’ve eaten a couple cave loads of bats lately

How much cap space did the leafs have before this trade? Effects how much cap relief the leafs will get from Nash + Andy on LTIR

Edit: wondering if it is like the Clarkson trade whereby the leafs targeted a player they can put on the LTIR but who's cap hit brings them really tight to the ceiling to get the most cap relief when both Nash + Freddy put on LTIR

There’s gotta be more to this trade. Otherwise, Dubas just paid full price for an injured 4th liner...while everyone else is getting 50% retained players. This can’t be it...

Sure, of course that's a possibility. But that is completely independent of Riley Nash. We could LTIR Andy him for the season or trade him, and we're in the same boat with or without the Nash trade.

If we're sending Andersen away, then we don't even need CBJ to retain on Foligno because we'll have the space for him.

It's not about cap space for us, it's about real dollars for Columbus. With Andersen on the LTIR Dubas could've traded for Dubinsky or Zach Smith, but he traded for the player who would exactly offset Columbus retaining 50% on Foligno in real dollars.

LTIR move. Leafs get cap space out of this and then get to actually use Nash in the playoffs when he's healthy. Win-win.

Ohhh that's interesting.

You're missing the point. If Andersen is staying on LTIR (he isn't) or being traded, then we don't need CBJ to retain anything on Foligno. If Andersen is coming off LTIR during regular season (he is), then we can't fit Foligno in the cap at half retention.

Looks like Nash's pro rated cap hit was really close to the leafs cap space before the trade so the leafs will only lose 323k from the total cap hits when both Nash + Andy put on LTIR

This is a brilliant move to get a some a depth player who can provide some size and decent board player. Without costing us anything
Our bottom 6 is too soft and 4th line can be very slow. This gives us an another veteran option

On top of that, the cap relief

This is a good trade for a decent player without losing anything. On top of that, paving the way for something bigger

Work of genius depending who Dubas can get

Leafs only get enough cap relief to fit Riley Nash, which he fully consumes. We can't use anymore of the $2.75m of relief that he provides, because he himself took all of it by us adding him to the roster. So we have exactly the same amount of cap space for the TDL as we did before we acquired Nash.

The catch is that Nash won't be activated off the LTIR until the playoffs. So when playoffs come, we add his $2.75m cap hit to the roster when there is no more cap limit.

But outside of activating him in the playoffs, we can't use his salary room on LTIR.

I tried reading the LTIR rules on Capfriendly just now but I went into a vegetative state. That said, I thought we got the full value back in cap space for a LTIR salary as long as we were spending to the limit otherwise? Isn't that why we picked up a couple of LTIR players over the past few years, to increase the cap?

I understand what you're saying. I'm saying this trade has nothing to do with cap space and everything to do with us making Foligno's retention "free" for Columbus.

Foligno probably isn't the only trade we're going to make. Andersen is done and will likely be traded, he was retroactively put on the LTIR to facilitate today's trade in cap space and us acquiring Nash facilitates Columbus retaining 50% of Foligno.
