I've tried to explain in the most summed down version and people are still arguing that the leafs dont receive the cap relief. I explained that they had to fit him under the cap than they placed him on ltir and we get space. Once healthy in the playoffs we can play nash since the cap doesn't matter.

But of course people just chirp saying we didnt get rick nash

Wow hes probably done for the year then. dubas/shanny have to hit a homerun and go big at the deadline. The team put pressure on them for once to make big moves.
Not unless we clear 1.35M in salary via trade - he can return for the post-season, but otherwise he's on LTIR for the rest of this one.

If Dubas aquires another goalie, I'd say Freddy is done. If not, they most likely think he will be ready. Start Campbell like the Caps started Grubauer and bring in Freddy as needed.

LTIR, Riley Nash will be a depth forward once he's back in the playoffs. I would think we are getting Taylor Hall, because if we were getting Foligno they would have just included that into the deal

They probably want a 2nd+ for Foligno.
Other teams know the Leafs are very close to being a fav for the Cup and will make the Leafs pay.

It's just so frustrating. Maybe I'm explaining things incorrectly. Or maybe I'm just wrong.but my understanding is the max cap is 81.5 mil. If for whatever reason marner got hurt. He goes on ltir at the beginning of the year for the season. That allows the leafs to spend the amount he's owed on someone else.than in the playoffs marner is healthy he gets to play as well as that replacement player. It's the same thing just later on in the season. So if freddy and nash are both on ltir until the playoffs the leafs can get a contract of 7.75mil for the remainder of this year. Does that make sense? Or am I just dead wrong?

To everyone who says Foligno would have been included in the same deal, the Leafs had to fit Nash under the cap before LTIRing him, with Andersen on alone they wouldnt have had enough to cover Foligno's full cap hit. Not saying itll happen, but this doesnt rule him out.

There was a twitter post earlier that said before this deal the Leafs had ~$1.5m in space to work with. So assuming Andersen isn't done for the regular season, they have at most $1.5m to work with.

I believe it was $2.1 mill and Andersen cannot come back unless the Leafs clear more cap which means Andersen is likely done for the season. Theyll be going into the TDL with ~7 million.

Dubas has gotten a good look at Nash in the playoffs when he was with the Bruins and Jackets as he was on those teams for a couple of the Leafs' first round exits. Definitely sees some value in him as a depth player.

Pretty much right, but its calculated from your current cumulative cap hit. Say the Leafs had 2 mill in cap space and then LTIR a player making 5 mill, they are only allowed to go 3 mill over the cap. I am assuming Dubas recalled a bunch of players to hit as close to the cap as possible before LTIRing Andersen and Nash though so itll be as close to 7.75 mill as possible, likely within 100k

Right. I was just using day one of the season to keep it simple. So I'm not crazy. The main board is absolutely nuts.
