I am a Leafs fan.

Trading a young #2 C and a 1st for a bottom pairing D man is not a good investment.
No you're not, it's actually wild that we have multiple posters posing as Leaf fans, only to shit on them in every single post possible

Why would Toronto trade a 1st, their 2nd best prospect, and a 4th for a guy who Toronto fans were calling Justin Holl 2.0 just a couple weeks ago? lol.
This IS the reason they traded a 1st, their 2nd best prospect, and a 4th for the guy.

While the fans hated Holl, the management loved him. Hence, this is very logical.

He's not a #2 C. He isnt even an everyday NHLer. You are reaching here. Minten hasn't even shown much offensive ability in junior, not the kind that projects as top-6 in the NHL. He's a big kid, with a high IQ. Carlo is not a bottom-pairing Dman either. All you have to do is look at his ice time, he plays 19-20 min a night as a defensive dman. That isn't bottom pairing.
Hopefully you are right about this.

Fills a huge need for Toronto and Carlo is probably the best D acquisition via trade since Muzzin. Most of the adds have been through UFA.

The Leafs desperately needed a more prime aged defensemen on their back-end, considering their off-season additions in Tanev/OEL are in their mid-30s, and Rielly/McCabe are locked up long-term entering their early 30s.

Carlo as Rielly's partner is a huge upgrade on past years' acquisitions like Schenn, Lyubushkin, etc. in the sense that Carlo is actually a legit 2nd pair D. Adds a unique element to the D-core that and rounds out the top 6.

Was a fan of Minten, but he's underproduced in the WHL, WJC, and now AHL. He's a mature defensive player for his age, has good intangibles and + instincts, but he's probably a 15+15 bottom six complementary player in terms of realistic potential at the NHL level.

Bruins fans seem awful cocky about getting a 1st round pick. You should probably look at your teams draft history before trashing the leafs for trading their pick. The last time the Bruins drafted anybody useful in the first round was 2014.

So the leafs trade a potential 3C someday, and some magic beans that Boston doesn’t know how to activate for Brandon Carlo signed/retained for 2 more years.

Yikes
Terrible evaluation. Almost like you have no idea what you are talking about.

Lybushkin is literally vastly better than Carlo this year, by basically every metric. More points, fewer penalties, better +/-, fewer giveaways.

This delusional overrating of Carlo is going to backfire in a big way...

They are? The bruins are done, for several years now. Nothing about them lives rent free with me 😂
What's funny is the Maple Leafs live rent free in my head because a lot of my favorite hockey memories are beating them in the playoffs, watching Komisarek run for his life from Lucic, the Van Ryn check... on and on.

Anyway, Carlo can be both good and also disliked by a fanbase that has watched him for years. Both can be true. Everyone can be right.

Wait a second, the guy on Dallas has a better +/- than the guy on Boston? Well now I’m sold.

Ah yes love to see that now that Carlo is a leaf, he's a bonafide scrub
Carlo isnt a scrub at all and I haven't seen anyone call him that. He's been a solid 2nd pair D who eats minutes and PKs with no offense. That's pretty valuable. He fell off a cliff this year for whatever reason. He's been a turnover machine and slipped defensively. Leafs hope he can regain previous form and not be this years version.

Some ppl have a victim complex, they perceive every little comment as a slight against their team

At the end of the day the Bruins did really well in this while the Leafs are a better team today than they were yesterday. It’s how trade deadline deals are supposed to work

I'm sorry Leafs fans but Carlo gives up the Blue Line, gets smoked by any player with outside speed, and, for a big guy, is not at all physical. This trade makes up for the Kaberle deal. Laughton's a nice pick up, but no one is getting past the Panthers.

As a Bs fan, I like Carlo. He will do well in Toronto. Calling him soft is wrong, he doesn’t shy from contact or not take the body, he just has no nasty or snarl to his game at all. And zero offense. If you had to take a drink every time he made a tape to tape pass to a forward you’d be the most sober guy on the planet at the end of the game. He’s a great skater for his size, has a really good stick, and can play a ton of minutes on the PK and defensive zone and never really look tired.

All you people with negative attitude towards this man need to realize that Leafs just added him to just play D.. Were not expecting points scored or any assists just to help Tanev out of more minutes so he his refreshed out there. Leafs needed help at rd and they got it. No need to make false claims against his defensive abilities.

He's a Berube/Tre style D in the same light as McCabe and Tanev. He doesn't need to be overly flashy or physical, just use his size to play solid and simple. Leafs get him for 3.5M two seasons after this one - you won't find that kind of value from this summers UFAs and cap value is something the Leafs need more than anything. Tre paid a hefty price to get him - I think Minten is a lock to be at least a bottom 6 center - but we have a 4 year cup window with Matthews contract and Carlo fits in perfectly.
