Thought it was a successful tournament

Of course his 1st goal against came in the gold medal game

it was one of those plays where he had to make a decision and commit to either blocking the pass or skate with the guy
he could have done both
but he double clutched on his decision

What are the implications of this chart for those of us who aren't biologists?
I sort of posted this tongue in cheek to explain how Cole Cassels might have different traits than his father, Andrew.

What the diagram depicts is the process of meiosis in which haploid sperm and egg cells are generated from diploid cells. In meiosis I, DNA undergoes a process known as chromosomal crossover, which essentially mixes genes. Then the chromosomes split into 4 daughter gametes that each contain half of the mixed DNA of a full person (haploid). Egg and sperm fuse at conception bring Cole's parent's DNA together to form a diploid Cole Cassels who, through random chance (a combination of chromosomal crossover and his mother's contribution to his genes), ended up not as strong a skater as his father.

Canucks fans are so screwed if (when, really) this guy makes the team.

Is it Tim Wallinder? Tom Wallinder? Tim Willander? Who effing knows, none of you will ever get his name right.

Which is fine. Suck it, spelling bees

Cassels was no Geoff Sanderson, but he wasn't as poor as Cole from what I can recall. Surprised that a kid who was good enough to make the OHL, that he didn't learn to skate better at a younger age given that the family had money to afford lessons to help him improve if he was one of the better kids at this age group.

I mean, I don't expect each kid to be as good as their parent. Niedermayer & Marleau, has 4 sons, so asking a lot for them to be as good as their dads who were among the very best skaters of their time. Just figured that if you have the financial means to afford lessons for your kid if they display the ability and desire to make it to a higher level of hockey as a teenager, that their skating would not end up being a weakness on scouting reports.

brett hull’s dad was one of the greatest skaters in NHL history and his mom was a figure skater who became a professional ice capades dancer

and he skated like fat boeser

It’s WeeeLonder… At least according to our Swedish GM when saying his name on the podium on draft day.

i always assumed that a W is pronounced like a V in swedish, but actually i don’t really know

not a lot of precedents: alex wennberg, nic wallin, matthias weinhandl, but none were famous enough to really know for sure how they pronounce their names

W isn't actually a letter in modern Nordic alphabets*, so these names are kind of grandfathered in (and I am guessing would be spelled with 'V's if they were coined today). They are pronounced as 'V' names if you listen to them on sites like Forvo or Google Translate, including tennis player Mats Wilander. That said, Google Translate gives "Willander" a full English 'W' which surprises me, but I suspect it is reading it as a foreign word -- it reads "Wilander" (one L) properly.

*It's funny because the Danish word for a "danish" (as in the pastry) is "Viennese bread" (wienerbrød). Which means not only do Danes not see danishes as Danish, but drive the point home by giving them a half-German name that can't even be spelled in their own alphabet.

Yeah…but the Danes don’t know shit about their own language.

I know Lekkerimaki and D-Petey got most of the attention in the recent WJHC, but Wilander quietly had an impressive tournament.

As one of the younger d-men in the tournament playing regular minutes (turns 19 in early February), he's a lock to be a dominant d-men in next year's tournament. And playing against older and bigger players in the NCAA will only add to his resume.

Not only can Canucks fans not even spell his name correctly, they can't even say it correctly.

You guys are so screwed now.

Jobs on the Canuck blueline will be wide open at the end of the season....if all their UFA's end up walking.

I suppose Allvin will be plumbing the UFA market or making some trades to fill in the gaps. But it wouldn't be a shock to me if guys like D-Petey and Willander arrive on the scene sooner than a lot of people are expecting them to.

Both Swedes and Danes call it Wienerbröd, i.e origin Vienna, Austria.

In Austria or Vienna it's called a Copenhagen pastry.

All I know is, it's damn good, almost as good as Tom Willander :)

I think both Willander and the team wants another year so he can work on his offense. I think that's the better development strategy. Continue to get better defensively this and next year take over the Lane Hutson void and learn how to drive offense from the back.

That’s what the announcers kept calling him

if you have been a Canucks fan for a long period of time you have damn near conversational level fluency in Swedish
To be fair, the Swedes that have played here mostly had names with spellings that are easy to pronounce/makes sense from an English standpoint (mind you English pronunciations often do not make sense due to inconsistency). Anyways…

Gradin is not “Gray”din but “Grah deen” deen like “dinner.” Ohlund is “Oh”lund. Sundström and Sundin are “Sun” “strom” and “deen” like Gradin” , respectively. Same with Sedin “Se” is as pronounced with “din” the same as “Gradin.” Edler is as pronounced. Even Don Cherry doesn’t screw that one up.

I am missing some names here but nothing like Åman being “Oh mon” and Willander being “Veelander”.

Edit: Elias Pettersson as well. "E Lee As" or "E Lie Us" "Petter Son" or "Peter Son". Surely nothing as complicated as Megan, Meagan, Meaghan, Meghan, Mehgan.
