Thinking of who we are going to draft in 2025 is absolutely not where this franchise should be prioritizing right now unless the plan is to go back into a rebuild.

A 2024 2nd would hold more trade value in improving the team in the near term which has to be the priority.

This was an underwhelming return, no two ways about it. We also could have easily retained to try and boost value.

If you don’t think Fitz absolutely tried the retention route I don’t know what to tell you. We just retained salary as a broker the other week. So the retention wasn’t seen as necessary by other teams in this instance.

So 'at best' it's gonna be like the same pick in 2025 as it would have been for the Montreal 2024 pick if the Jets fall down an elevator shaft. When a best-case is hoping against hope for status quo a year later, it really isn't.
But the problem is the Jets weren't willing to move the Montreal second, so the pick being this year or next is irrelevant. At least next year there is a chance the Jets don't make the playoffs

It’s a perfectly reasonable return.

I also wouldn’t assume that 2024 pick does hold more near future trade value. Unless we’re trading for a goalie at the draft I think a 2025 2nd round pick is a more tradeable asset this summer than some kid we just took in the 2nd round.

One because I’m not sure teams love to trade guys immediately after picking them and two because we have no clue if the prospect we took is someone another team likes as much. Certainly isn’t as valuable if the team we’re dealing with doesn’t see him as a guy who should’ve gone 2nd round.

the time value difference between a 2024 pick and 2025 pick is a killer. Especially as they don’t have a 2nd of their own.

What happens if they win the lottery again and move up to the point where the 1st is too valuable to give up? It would be a good thing overall. But it also takes away the ability for a goalie trade with a 2nd this year.

just happy Fitz got something didn’t sign him. The return is as I expected.

Fitz wasn’t going to sign Sharangovich so I’m not going to factor Yegor into my view of the TT move

Again it's not a matter of taking Winnipeg's 2024 as opposed to 2025, it's a matter of MONTREAL's 2024 as opposed to Winnipeg's 2025. Winnipeg already traded their own 2024 pick. What are the odds Winnipeg finishes bottom seven or whatever next year?
the montreal pick is irrelevatn if they weren't willing to trade it. Thats the exact same as saying this is bullshit becasue he didn't get Bostons first. If a team isn't willing to give up an asset, then there really isn't much Fitz can do. You take their second. If you take a second this year, you draft or use it towards a goalie. If you take it next you you can hope they don't make the playoffs and you can draft or trade it at the deadline or this year with othere assets for a goalie.

I would've been ok with a 1st for next year or 2 2's. A 1st for this year would've been the goal
Yeah .. would have though they could snag LA's 1st this year, or that high second from the Pegs this year. You can only get what's available and apparently teams didn't value TT as highly as we were led to believe.

Wonder if we'd see a trade down from the Devils if they won the lottery, Celebrini is great but the haul from a trade down would literally gift them any goalie they wanted in the league realistically.

We basically traded away Sharangovich for a 2025 2nd rounder......Fitz screwed up.
I mean I would have taken that in the offseason without the benefit of hindsight but the problem isn't so much the trade, the problem is our lack of personnel acumen punting on a guy who obviously had another gear in him.

The positives
  • Gives Timo Meier free rein on PP1
  • Gives Alexander Holtz some ability to move into the top-6 (I know last night wasn't foreboding)
  • Avoids what could end up being a tough contract
  • Gets the Devils something for a guy Devils fans probably prefer to be off the team on July 1
I would've wanted more. The supposed lack of retention has me wondering if the Devils are going to try for Markstrom one more time. If they don't, maybe a good idea to facilitate another 75% retention trade to add another pick

Mentioned it in the 2024 Draft thread, but have read from a few places that the talent really drops off around #20 this year. So there might be an argument to be had that a mid-2025 2nd would be better than a high 2024 2nd.

Naturally was hoping for more but hopefully we can move onto a goalie next.
