To sign or not to re-sign that is the question with Freddy Andersen.?

This guy is playing absolutely shit.

Not surpring he was the one goalie that couldn't shutout Edmonton. He gets beat high every single time from both sides. The book is out, just go high and he won't even move.

and a five holy the size of the Grand Canyon. The guys beat everywhere every game.

he should change his name to Friederik Adersern because he’s FRIED. COOKED. DONE.

We need to trade for a #1 goalie or a goalie that can run a 1A or 1B with Campbell. Not next year, it has to happen before the trade deadline.

We cannot squander another year. Another year off Mathews, marner and nylanders deals. Just no.

Time to grow some balls dubas and do something bold.

Leafs are in a position where they can get to the ECF easily this year and maybe beyond as well. I'd hate to see it not happen at all because we had a GM who refused to pull the trigger and keep a goalie who is shown to never win games when it matters.

Seriously though it’s extremely frustrating that in a year that offers arguably the easiest path to the final four we’ll ever see, with the strongest defence corps we’ve assembled in ages, our forwards who’ve only grown defensively and can score at will, we may be sunk by the most brutal goaltending we’ve had in a while.

yeah I’m used to us having elite goaltending but poor defense. Potvin Cujo Belfour Reimer all had mediocre to horrible D.

Exactly this ^ think big picture.

Among goalies with 200 FA at Even Strength, Freddy is 23rd of 58 in sv% (.920)

Among goalies with 50 FA while short handed, Freddy is 46th of 47 goalies in sv% (.781)

Among all goalies who has faced at-least a single shot while on the powerplay, Freddy is 62nd of 73 goalies in sv% (.857)

What is FA?

That really is a litmus test for me. He needs to look past what Andersen has done and look at what he's capable of doing. Even in his best years with the Leafs he is just a slightly above average goalie and right now he's got a long way to go before he even gets to average.

Time to move on.
No extension.
No contract talks.

We are moving on.

Keefe is the coach, he’s gotta start Campbell when he’s back as the #1 whenever possible so we know what we have in him for next season.

It then gives us an idea if we can run a 1A/1B with Campbell or if we need to go out and grab a #1 from elsewhere like Gibson (bad stats but he plays in front of Anaheim with Eakins as coach).

Andersen is done here. I think the Leafs have an easy road to the ECF and yet I still think Andersen could f*** it up very easily.

This team has gotten better awareness and commitment from forwards on D and the D itself has gotten better and yet he continues to suck. He’s below .900 in his last 45 games so it’s not just this season, he’s just continuing where he left off.

Before heading to the playoffs, I’d try to do at least two things: get a top six forward and a reliable bottom pair guy for depth if we are sure we aren’t playing Sandin or Liljegren this season.

so special teams are his problem

Unfortunate about Campbell’s slow recovery and Freddie’s below average year occurring at the same time.
Can’t say much more about it, can you?
Looked like a very smooth transition plan to next year.

I think the better D this season has exposed him in a way...he is getting less easy shots from bad spots to pad his save percentage. He looked better a few years back with his save % because he was facing a lot more shots. The less shots you face and if you give up the same amount of goals...down goes the save %. He knows he isn't coming back and he is basically auditioning for the rest of the league for next year. A guy who can't handle pressure well is not going to perform under that set of 'unfortunate circumstances' as Lou used to say.

Last year should have been the sign that Freddy was done here. But our management is too slow with these tough cutthroat decisions. They were too slow to fire Babcock and now they've been too slow to get rid of Freddy. I get it that it's a tough decision, Freddy took you to the playoffs every year, he's good with the boys blah blah blah... Sorry but no , Freddy is so lucky there's no crowds this year because he'd be getting broken by boos this year.

Babcock should have been fired but I guess they gave him one last kick at the can. Then he sucked and it was an easy decision to kick his butt out. I guess Dubas needed a good reason, and he got one.

Same with Andersen and his .932 in the playoffs which was heavily inflated and the fact that he really only had one poor season... Otherwise, he was outperforming our defense for 3 straight years. Combine that with the fact that, unlike Babcock, there were not too many clear replacement options (and we somewhat dodged a bullet since most of them have not been living up to their contracts to this point) and it was probably the best option to give him another chance to start the season.

However, he has been given his chance and it did not work out, so it is time to look towards other options. Our team and coach is protecting him, but I think even they know that Andersen has been letting this team down for pretty much all of Keefe's tenure with the Leafs. It is time to move on, but I am not going to necessarily had to happen in the offseason because we don't know if there was even an option to do it in the offseason. For all we know, it may not even be an option to do it now, but at least he should explore it like he did in the offseason (when it was rumored he was looking at Markstrom and I think Lehner as replacements for him).

Andersen ranks 22nd amongst goalies with 500+ mins in 5v5 HDSv% at .808 He drops to 38th in All Situation HDSv%. Worse than Matt Murray in Ottawa.

There are 24 NHL regular goalies that have an All Situation HDSv% of .794 or better.... This year Sv% is down league wide but generally a starter should be around an HDSv% of .800 or better. Andersen is at .776.

Meanwhile he is tied with Vasilevskiy and Gibson for 11th league wide in Low Danger Sv% at .890. He has always posted a high LDSv% and a below average HDSv%. One of those things indicates goaltending skill to me. The other one *shrug*.

there is nothing wrong with freddy regular season game, he always has bad stretches, he will still get u a 100 points, its his playoff game that is weak...

This is a graphic of HDSV% at all strengths with a minimum 900 minutes TOI (~15 games played). Of the 21 goalies that meet the 900mins TOI requirement, Freddy is ranked dead last at 21. It is no where near good enough. I fully understand he has been playing hurt most likely. But he is not performing at a level that commands 80% of the net share. He at this point is costing us games. The Leafs finally have a team that has committed to limiting HDCA, and when they do come in, we need our goalies to step up. Freddy has the ability to make the saves he should make, but struggles to make the saves we need him to make. He relies far too much on his extremities which leaves him extremely vulnerable to redirected shots. I can't remember the last game where Freddy has not let in at least 1 goal off of a redirected shot. He needs to play more positionally and track the play better. The Stastny tip is a prime example of this. He fails to track the original shot, which was going wide of the net, and the tip put it exactly where Freddy should have been. The original shot is going a foot wide on the trapper side, and he is almost hugging his blocker side post when the puck is released from the point. Makes my f***ing head spin. I really think we need to do a 50:50 split when Campbell gets healthy, hopefully it elevates Freddy's game. Because he is complete trash right now

The problem with him is that you cannot play him too much (a problem in the playoff ) or play him less (he needs to find his game). I blame the goalie coaches for this issue. They failed to find him the happy number.

I believe they did attempt to move him this past offseason but nobody was willing to meet their ask. Like a falling stock, it is better to sell low sooner than later. He was worth a late 1st or early second this past summer. Probably have to give him away now to open cap space for a new goalie.
