Post-Game Talk: To be the man you have to beat the man... Habs beat cup champs 3-1!

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

So what? Habs are missing a 2C and our top Dmen too.
I gotta admit though. Newhook has been playing a ton better lately. He is actually finishing checks and backchecks like crazy. That line needs an established center and Habs find one, it will be a very solid 2nd line.
Agreed 100% if mgmt can get a good center that would be a big step forward.

I hope this second half will be the lightbulb moment Slaf needs to really understand that his skill shines when he forechecks, battles along the board and plays physical.

Players like Panarin create space through deception, skill plays through skating/stickhandling/offensive IQ. Slaf does it by dragging alone two players on the boards then making a brilliant pass or by beating the defender with his size. The process is different, but the end result is the same. It doesn't matter if it isn't pretty, its effective and its the most translatable type of game in the playoffs. He can make his incredible passes after creating that space... but he has to create it. Skilled players who try to play a passive game (not challenging defenders) aren't anymore effective than he is when hes not physical.

Btw,

Is coaching still a serious problem? Asking for a friend.
I laughed out loud at that one!:D:D

This game was great. These guys are learning how to win in their biggest games, and the best way to do that is to play those games.

A couple things:
- probably one of the best lines in the league since the Four Nations, one reason is that Suzuki, Caufield and Slavkovsky were all well-rested coming out of it. It's a long season and this whole team looked tired going into Four Nations, and well rested coming out of it.

- this win doesn't happened if the Habs had sold off any of their UFAs (likely just to get more 2nd round picks and prospects when those are the things they have a surplus of). It looked like Evans, Armia and Savard played that whole 6 on 4 penalty-kill with Matheson (another veteran), and of course the clinching goal was Dvorak from Savard, two veterans.

I am so glad that Hughes stuck with the plan at the deadline. The players wanted it, and Evans signed a team-friendly deal. Yes, it would have been great for Evans to be on a cup contender, but he has to feeling great right now having just played big minutes in a big role to close down this victory.

Lots of games to go and too many teams chasing probably only one playoff spot, but we can't ask for more at this point in the season.

Congrats on your 100th NHL goal Dvo. How ya feelin' about that?

His board play particularly on that left wall in the Dzone is second to none. There is no doubt in my mind his play is what stirs the drink on that 1st PK wave.

I remember when Armia was acquired from Jets and people were asking what they are getting. I said one of the best PK players around. And he continues to be.

There's great value in that.

Speaking of Demidov, when does the KHL season end? Can we get him this season?
The regular season ends on March 23rd but his team will be in the playoffs. Even if they get eliminated early then SKA could still refuse to let him join the Habs until his contract ends on May 31st.

I wouldn't count on him coming over for this season or post season.

Yes, still don't think MSL is a good coach. It's been nearly a whole season wherein every time a player or the team sucks, it's their fault. If a player or the team does good, it's because of Marty and his staff. I believe that the team is playing well despite their coach.

That said, he's not awful, just below average imo and I'd like to see a change sometime next season.

Great win! Monty has been absolute clutch!

Too bad the Leafs couldn't return the favour tonight.

Leafs are slumping hard. 1-4-1 in last 6 games with their only win coming in a shootout against Utah. Tampa Bay has taken over 2nd place now & Ottawa has made up like 10 pts since 4 Nations break. They're only 4 pts back of Toronto now.

Next 3 games for Toronto: vs Calgary, vs Colorado & @ NYR.

If we can get a 2c, Anderson - Newhook - Dach might be a good 3rd line.

Struble and Newhook have done well stepping into their shoes.

Also, Carrier has done well as Matheson's partner.
Yeah. They have done a great job. I just hope they don't run out of gas. We have bug hole in the second line and top 4. I'm surprise Kent did not try to trade for a cheap 3c to play with Laine and Newhook. Roy has been a disappointment and Beck is not top 6 player.
