Auston Matthews (Captain Edition)

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

In the meantime, feel free to join our Discord Server
I don't disagree with you. Domi was far more impactful, tonight, and if Matthews had gotten lucky with his goal, things would have looked even worse.

In hindsight, keeping Marner is for the best because just like Toews / Kane, the lighter / smaller Marner will have a longer/better career than Mathews.
Looks like another thing this management team has gotten wrong. If I am Marner, as much as I love being a Leaf, I am getting the fck out.

Or he will be like Martin St. Louis and realize he isn't as good as Toronto (Tampa Bay) made him look.

I don’t think matthews next contract is bigger caphit. And the leafs should walk away from him just like marner and they both can be losers in Chicago and teach Bedard how to maximize his bank account and vacation time!

60 point players are subpar lol

Especially at 11.5M, he should be a top 6 winger on a playoff team, nothing more. Like a Val nichushkin. He’s not a special player.
What are you talking about? He hasn't played a single game yet at 11.5M. And you don't think he's a top 6 winger? Strange post, not getting this at all sorry.

43 pts in 54 playoff games or 65 pts per 82
Including stats from 5+ years ago isn't going to tell you anything about the player he is today. Over the last several years, he's the only star player we have who's production doesn't go way down in the playoffs, in fact it stays almost the same which is pretty damn good considering overall scoring goes down in the playoffs. Lumping Nylander in with the others as subpar playoff performers just makes it look like you haven't been paying attention.
A second tier player talked as if hes a core player like the rest of them
Yeah Ok, sure thing bud.

Matthews is just further proof that being "the best player" doesn't make you a leader nor means you should have a token letter.

There's a reason why he had never been a Captain before... He's not Captain material.
(Neither is Tavares IMO)

What I’ve kinda noticed is that in 6v5 or PP, they defer a lot to Matthews. Try to set him up for the one timer: that’s where most of our turnovers come from. Given his history it’s understandable, but I think with how poor he’s been this year, it just magnifies the problems even more.

I can’t believe he played in the four nations. That was nonsense and unserious from the get go, from someone as injured as has been and clearly is.

Also surprised he didn’t take 8 years on his contract. He’s actually quite injury prone.

Matthews being a greedy f*** has finally helped the Leafs. Imagine having that albatross of a deal signed for another 7 years

What exacerbates the problem is if there's someone in the shooting lane lightly covering him he'll retreat with his little fade away to up top or curl back towards the point. At which time everyone else is just standing around looking to shift positions. Of course this is designed to throw off the other team, but I think it scrambles the Leafs too. Why not just flick the puck on net more rebound opportunities?

Shorter contracts, more often than not, work in the team's favour. Not sure why so many allow long term contracts - unless you have a culture like Boston where players are willing to take less to stay but, then again, Boston just gave Swayman a TON of money and years.

The evidence is mounting that the C does in fact stand for Curse.

We need to hire Sundin and Gilmour immediately to figure out what counterspells they used.

Doesn’t matter how much anyone tries to preach to this group. If they don’t care themselves then whatever someone tries to tell them won’t matter.

The fact that we're paying 13.25 for a guy who is in form every other year is depressing

He also should not have been named captain. Morgan Rielly has been the true leader of this team since 2019

Just curious what the Leafs could have got trading back in his draft?
