Georgiev is ridiculously bad and it’s kinda embarrassing the Sharks play him.

1) what happened to this dude? Once promising, he’s put together decent full seasons, but man.. I’m watching a replay of the game earlier, and that Protas goal- idk how he misplays Eller’s bid so badly, but Protas doesn’t even celebrate. Maybe that’s just Protas, but it’s got a “ya, wasn’t against a real goalie though” feel to it.
2) Big fan of what Grier has done overall, but is the goalie thing a bridge too far? Like- you had a respectable starter, and now you’re kinda dooming your team to play in a way where they can never trust their goalie. Never mind the arguments regarding purposely tanking- if they need to lose so bad, shit, I’ll play goalie. Georgiev approaches that level, right now, so you kinda gotta question what the actual line is. Buffalo organically didn’t have a goalie, you can criticize their tank for many other reasons, but actively seeking the worst goaltending possible- don’t like it, personally.

We traded a first and a solid center prospect for Askarov, and immediately signed him to a 2x2. It's his starting position to lose next year. He is definitively the future.

After that and earlier this season, we had Blackwood playing very good hockey, but no room for him in the future. The Avs jumped on him and we took the 2nd, because all Blackwood was going to do was walk in UFA, since he wanted a real pay day for the first time and Grier wasn't about to put Askarov in the same position he was in behind Saros and/or wasn't willing to pay for two starters in 3-5 years. Georgiev came back to keep rosters balanced in COL/SJ. so it all makes sense from a GM POV, short and long term.

That said... Georgie was an absolutely toxic add and I wish we didn't add him. Or wish we had just waived him, but that's not how NHL GMs tend to work, certainly not a seemingly "player friendly" GM like Grier, who also probably thought Georgie had a shot at turning into a pick or prospect at the deadline as a reclamation project. Instead, Vanecek did and Georgie is our clear starter.

We would still be tanking (or at least very bad) without him, but he's the commander now. Once a game, at least, he completely spazzes out, and seems like more than half the time those turn into goals against. For sure has cost us a handful of wins since the trade.

We don’t play to win this season, but it’s tough to watch as a fan and I can’t even imagine what the (other) players feel, having to put with this (total lack of) goaltending.

Not sure what you have in mind. It's widely accepted that the Sabres traded away goalies until they found someone bad enough to play for them during the tank for McDavid, for example.

He's probably the same echelon of goalie as Vanecek, can be an elite backstop in a system but garbage as a #1.
If the Sharks find a taker for him (or he signs on as a backup) he can have a strong season next year.

I don't think he's an NHL starter but I don't know what you're seeing on that Protas goal. That was brutal defensive coverage by the Sharks. Eller walks in alone and Georgiev makes a nice save with his ear, Eller makes a nice play to chip the puck back in the blue paint where Protas gets a freebie because Georgiev is down and out from making the initial save when 9 times out of 10 that puck goes in the corner and he gets to reset.

This is not even close to true. I've heard this myth repeated quite a bit. Just because someone is a #1 doesn't mean he'll be an "elite" #2. He was the Rangers' backup and he was awful. If anything he played better with the Rangers when he played more often and a lot of people thought that maybe he would be a better starter.

Gotcha, good explanation. And ya, I’m guessing Georgiev is worse than Grier expected and he’s kinda wishin he went for.. not him. Dude has done .918 seasons, goalies are weird.

Traded Miller for a 1st and the corpse of Steve Ott? Idk, I regarded that as a more natural hockey trade- year before the big draft, I think, we weren’t going anywhere, absolutely sucked seeing Miller leave but we were sellers at that point. I suppose you could argue leaving Enroth in charge was similar, but at least that didn’t have the optics of “we are actively switching out a good goalie for someone we know is awful” in the 2nd-3rd year of a tank.

Eh, looked to me like he was cheating in the first place even as Ellers is driving short side, and that makes the save more difficult. That leads to him somehow putting the rebound right smack dab in front, which is just tough to do with an Ellers shot that was not labeled top corner.

It was known that part of the value of the trade was the Sharks taking Georgiev off Colorado’s hands. We still needed someone to eat the starts that were likely to be losses. We got a 2nd and Kovalenko for doing them that favor and Blackwood. They will be alright with whatever criticisms come with that. The point is to develop and look to building the future and this does that. Getting any of Schaefer, Misa, Hagens, or Martone plus Kovalenko and a 2nd is more important than finishing even just 3rd to last, lotterying down to 5th and getting Frondell and a 2nd and nothing else for Blackwood.
 
His play has has fallen off a cliff. If he can't perform for a team that should be a contender, you can't expect him to perform for a lottery team.
 
Very talented player but also prone to completely losing focus. Think he needed more time in the minors with the rangers.
 
Georgiev has the insane ability to turn any play, anywhere on the ice, into a high scoring chance. the other goalie dishing the puck away becomes a high danger shot when he is on net.

on this game, forget the Protas goal. Georgiev managed to get a goal from TVR, the most defensive of all defensive defenseman, from behind the crease. like... no way! TVR literally found himself on that spot and threw the puck towards the middle, it hit Georgiev's back and entered. lol thinking about it, he gotta be the most entertaining goalie since Bryzgalov. both for the wrong reasons but entertaining nonetheless.
