Huberdeau can carry a line offensively at least. Yea he's a liability in his own end but lets not act like Tkachuk is a shutdown winger either. With Barkov there they could have him shut guys down (and score) and let the "2nd" line be all offence. If you've watched a lot of our games then I'm surprised you're forgetting Lundell. Also not completely on board with the view that Huber is a line driver. He's not consistent and he cheats defensively big time. I don't say that as a knock on him because I think that's how he's asked to play. But the points are a bit deceiving. Even looking at how many points he gets at 5v5 vs all other scenarios relative to other top players will knock him down a few pegs in some minds.
No idea what the lines will be like, but not worried about the forward set at all. May not be as high octane, but will be more well rounded. Losing March is the big loss in my mind.
And i don't get how you think paying a 30 year old huber more than a 24 year old tkachuk makes any sense...
Yes worried about defence for next year, but year after that will have cap room to fix. Next year needed to bea retool year if this team wants to seriously compete for more than just one more year.
I haven't forgotten about Lundell, he's a fantastic player. But is he ready to carry a line in the top 6? I feel like he almost needs to be now, unless Reinhart is supposed to do it. I love Bennett but he's not that guy.
The Huberdeau contract won't age well for sure, but I think Tkachuk is one of the most overrated players in the league. So for a team in win-now mode you take the better player in Huberdeau and worry about his down years later.
