That's surprising to be honest. I get not wanting to lock up a player on the wrong side of 30 for that long, but it seems more than a bit disloyal (yes, I understand it's a business).
When the cap is so tight, you’ll take the team down with loyalty. He just simply can’t do that, and from a money viewpoint both Hubie and Weegs should actually thank Zito for that.

Zito hurt their feelings but helped their bank accounts.

We might still see some work on defense yet, but I don't agree that the bottom six is bad. It's more grinding than it is offensive like it was last year, but arguably that's what we needed more of.

I think people are looking at the bottom 6 and comparing it to last year and not seeing any big names. But what I see is guys that are more experienced and mature, less likely to sacrifice defense for offense.

I might need to update my profile picture shirt

I got traded and all I got was this lousy shirt

I think the quote is taken out of context. The GM and agent will be talking all the time. Zito probably already had an idea of what Huber wanted, but they didn't start official negotiations on an extension. Zito as a former agent knows how this is done. Zero chance he never talked to Walsh. Maybe not recently, but he knew what they wanted.

My guess is Huber wanted at least same as Barkov and/or 8 years. As I've argued before, that's a bad contract for a player on the wrong side of 30.

Assuming no trades:

Tkachuk - Barkov - Reinhart
Verhaeghe - Bennett - White
Balcers - Lundell - Hornqvist
Lomberg - Luostarinen - Cousins

Forsling - Ekblad
Gudas - Montour
Carlsson - Staal

Bobrovsky
Knight

Huberdeau is almost certainly better than Tkachuk next year but it's not a huge difference. I'm a Weegar is overrated guy but losing him is a big loss, that defense is not good. Top 6 forwards are great, top 3 defense too, bottom 6 and bottom 3 are bad. Goaltending is fine.

I’m not so sure.
Tkachuk is the powerforward in the game, better goal scorer and adv stats love him

I'm not convinced that we're going to be in much pain next season.

If the defense stays the same there will be pain

I'm also very interested to see how Huber will perform next year as 'the guy'. He's always had elite help, never really had to be the guy for long, just in short spurts through injury. He's definitely benefited from playing with Barkov or playing down a line.

I like him, but I don't think he's the bonafide franchise guy all the Canadian media are making him out to be. Think we'll see some people surprised next year when he drops off.

Good news is we have the roster space
And one of them is fairly likely to get at least an extended look given the cap space.

I get it. My only real concern in that regard is will it make other players think twice about coming here down the line. Relationships matter in this business.

Some dude on the Habs board mentioned that one of acquaintances who knows Huby first hand said that he's really pissed because he has to leave Florida.

Jesus the people in this thread know nothing about the panthers lmao, it's cringe to even look at

We’re not even close to Vegas. Players still join that shithole.

Reading any traditional media take on this trade is pretty cringe. Even The Athletic which is usually pretty good. You can tell there's a lot of stat watching.

I also think cap management still gets way too underestimated in how teams operate and the moves they make. Super important nowadays, especially in a sort of flat cap world. The fact Tkatchuk is signed at a good contract through prime years while Huber/Weegs are about to hit the age curve and aren't signed just doesn't get enough attention. It's mentioned, but not really as a key piece to the trade, almost secondary, when it was probably just as important as any other considerations in this trade.

I only wish other GMs were still this stupid. Old school trade would have seen this done with Huber/1st, but obviously there was a bit of a bidding war plus Flames knew how valuable an asset a signed Tkachuk really is today.

Flames fan here. I’m not going to analyze the trade other than to say I can see the logic on both sides. I’m here to give you my impression of Tkachuk as a Flames fan who did not like him and I’ve wanted to see him gone for a couple years.

First he’s a weasel as is widely known. You’re going to find out now how big of a weasel he is. If you like that kind of player you’ll love Matty. If you don’t at some point you’re going to find him to be an embarrassment.

Don’t worry about his skating. It’s not elite but it’s more than adequate, especially since his hockey IQ is for the most part good.

His defensive game is strong. Backlund really helped him develop that being his centre for a few years.

His offensive game is good, but not as great as many think. His 104 point season last year was a product of playing with Gaudreau, Lindholm and Sutter’s coaching. He’s going to need to really click with Barkov or he’s a 60-80 point guy otherwise.

He’s not a playoff player. There‘s certainly the potential for him to develop into one if he changes his attitude.

There’s a misconception around the league he’s a physical player and that he drags his team into the battle. I don’t see him as either. He punks the other team, and when the other team gets to the point they want to push his nose into his face he turtles and his teammates have to stand up for him. It got to the point in Calgary that they quit standing up for him. There‘s been several documented and rumored stories about that.

He’s been called a top 10 winger in the league. He’s not. More like top 20 with the potential to become a top 10 if he gets his stuff together.

He’s not a team player. He’s a selfish prima Donna who doesn’t mesh well with a lot of teammates. I’m not sure if he can change that.

Take my comments as you will. I started off loving him but grew to really dislike him.
Tampa won 2 Cups by weaseling so I'm good with that

"f*** them picks"

Ah yes, I forgot about St. Louis. The Scott Stevens compensation picks.

Lol at the Seals. How do you trade 3 1sts in a row when you're an expansion team? Fun fact, they traded the pick that became Guy Lafleur to Montreal for a journeyman who was done in like 5 years, forget his name.

Idk, I just don't see it. You don't base your plans around a UFA that has his pick of the litter.

I still think best option for Kling would be Dallas, they'll be better next season, Oettinger will be more established, they should score more with Bowness gone. Miller can be the 7th or 8th D.

How do we know Zito hasn’t had any talks with Klingbergs camp?

& it’s not as much as Klingberg picking Dallas but Dallas not being after him.

They signed Miller+ Marchment instead.

They have Robertson to sign now, Hintz next summer.
Those 2 can get around 18M combined
