As a Lightning fan, I feel like this was managements reaction to getting swept and pushed around by the Bolts. I feel like the defense was the biggest issue and who was brought in to replace Chariot and Weeger? Weeger looked awful against us. I expect some more grit moves coming as well. See you guys next year on the ice and this trade will be either great or terrible in 5 years. Only time will tell.
I think Staal is a decent low key replacement for Chiarot. You just cant play him 20 mins a night. I think we will also add at least one more defenseman by the tdl.

I'm nervous about our defense, but, looking from a positive light:

Forsling - Ekblad
Great top pair. Forsling was always at least as good as Weegar, and he makes 1000x more sense to be Ekblad's partner because he can actually skate and is LHD.
Carlsson - Montour
At his best, Montour is a dynamic middle pair defenseman. He was traumatized by Buffalol, but he's returned to status as a good (albeit undisciplined) offensive d-man. Carlsson is our secret weapon. He was great on the bottom pair all year and is clearly ready for a bigger role.
Staal - Gudas
Well that's just a good, reliable, punishing bottom pair.

I still believe that we can content for a Cup this year (assuming Maurice will bring decent coaching) if Zito somehow add one top-4, at least 2nd pairing Dman. 2 top-4 D woul be perfect, but I don't expect it until next offseason because of not having cap space & assets.

Idk if Carlsson will be ready for those minutes just yet, probably Staal for now. Hopefully he is by end of the season though, and I quite like his skillset. We really need him and Kiersted to step up and become players for us over the next couple seasons.

Some dude on the Habs board mentioned that one of acquaintances who knows Huby first hand said that he's really pissed because he has to leave Florida.

I think he wanted to stay honestly

Would this trade have occurred if Huby and Weegar performed well in the playoffs?

Zito had faith in Barkov and Huby to take this team deep into the playoffs.
He traded players and draft picks to surround Barkov and Huby with better players to get to the promised land.

Barkov and Huby didn’t get it done. At all.

Zito has made a decision that neither Huby or Weegar could get the job done
in the playoffs and he moved on from them.

Weegar has way too many boneheads plays to be counted on in the playoffs.
Huby is a great regular season player. You can’t say the same for the playoffs.

We were 2 feet away from an empty net goal and going down 3 to 1 in the first round of the playoffs to the Caps. Thank God Swaggy stepped up.

Zito made a mistake in putting his faith in Huby and Barkov.

He’s realized his mistake and is reshaping the team.

I never doubted that, but he needed to take a team friendly deal and he wasn't interested by all indications.
yah but I think he deserves the 9-10 million... it's just the age thing and our gm chose no.. I don't understand how we couldn't get Calgary to take some capspace for us

I still don't think so. Obviously if we win the Cup, or at least make it to round 3, things might've been different. But knowing what we know, Huby is not worth anything close to Barky let alone more, and Weegar is not worth anything close to 7M. Zito is just not gonna let himself by handcuffed by bad contracts, and that's a huge plus for us.

I could live with 9, nothing over. 9.25 is pushing it. But it sounds like the camps were way far apart, and Zito wouldnt even be able to get him down to that on the low end. Zito set our contract structure with Barky at 10, and similar to the Canes he won't budge from that. And I can live with that.

Because Huby and Weegar could and likely will leave Calgary after the season and all they’ll be left with is a late 1st and Schwindt. I just don’t see why they would’ve taken cap space back. That would only make it harder for them to try to keep those 2 guys, as unlikely as it may be.

Also, I think he deserves the money too, but only for the next 2-3 years. After that’s it’s pretty risky

Because the 'age' thing is no small thing. Paying $9-10M for prime years like with Tkachuk is hugely different from paying that much for an aging Huber. I think it's being extremely underestimated and underappreciated the big difference this is between the two.

Also if Huber is pissed, he should be pissed at himself and his agent. The way his contracts were structured is because he was inconsistent early in his career did he couldn't get a huge contract into his UFA years. His agent also didn't foresee how the landscape was changing to younger guys in RFA getting better deals and GMs catching on about not wanting to pay big dollars to aging players.

I'm sad about him leaving because he's like our first homegrown star. His Calder I think was the first individual award by a drafted player and first for any player that gets voted on. I would have loved to see him win a cup with us, but he priced himself out. Sentiment only gets us so far.

Like I've said before, Ii he really wanted to stay and compete, he needed to take a very team friendly deal, which obviously he wasn't willing to do.
