ok eeyore .... do you need some sun to cheer you up ?

whats everyone complaining out ... who was the best dman available after AP ?? thats right brodie ..... and got at a reasonable cap hit ... we still have 3 + months before the season starts save your anger for the actual season

Draft, why are we making the same mistakes as past Leaf teams....we can sign players in areas we lack depth lol....its always been the same old crap and the results will still be the same.

If I was a Canucks fan, I would be nervous as hell TBH.

Was checking the stats from the time Keefe took over to end of season and here were the team defensive rankings:

1. Columbus
2. Minny
3. Boston
4. Tampa
5. Philly

10. Toronto

27: Chicago
28: Winnipeg
29: Detroit
30: NYR
31: Vancouver

Vancouver didnt feel the full sting (although they still allowed the 6th most goals over this span) mostly due to the incredible play of Markstrom but now with losing him, their best defensive dman and possibly Stecher who was a really defensively solid bottom pairing guy as well, they could be in for a slaughter when it comes to goals against next year, no matter how well Hughes develops.

Actually 17th in ga/gp since November 20th,2019. To March 11, 2020.
NHL Stats

Calgary replaced him with Tanev because they do know something, and clearly he lacks defensive abilities hence why they signed Chris.

Apparently Kyle hasn't got the memo yet, defensive defenseman.

Gotta love it

If there’s anything reassuring about this game of musical chairs it’s the fact that Flames fans are not in support of the Brodie for Tanev downgrade.

In hindsight, it probably worked better for the Leafs- Cap wise, that Kadri nixed the trade. I know if Kadri didn’t, we didn’t had to endure Barrie....but I am 100%sure if TJ was traded last season, his extension would have been higher than 5mil/4yrs.
Kerfoot is also way better than Jankowski. So we get the best parts of both potential trades moving forward.

I'm not sure who is better, Brodie or Tanev.

I do expect the Leafs defense to be better this year.

It does seem Brodie was Dubas' target, for quite some time.

As for games per season played, that's an easy one, but that is like everything thing in hockey, future is uncertain.

With goals against being an outcome of team defensive play(xGA) and goalkeeping performance(save%), I was listing the ranking of team defensive play since the hiring. With Toronto having reliably been in the mid 20s over the last few years, it was very encouraging to see them so high on the list right?

The reason GA is lower than xGA during that period is because Andersen had a pretty down year combined with that dumpster fire at backup (until Campbell came on board).

I’m not a huge fan of the Brodie signing but I think Tanev is worse. Remember this guy is as injury prone as Lupul was and had a career renaissance playing with Quinn Hughes. Maybe you could say he could do some good things for Rielly but the injury history and his age makes me nervous.

Beside AP, TJ is by far the best Dman of the UFA class. Tanev can’t play 82 games, Hamonvic is not better than TJ.

If there is a Leaf fan out there who is confident that Brodie is not the best partner that Rielly has ever had, would he/she please chime in and let us know why. I'd then ask, if Brodie is the best partner that Morgan has ever had, does it not stand to reason that the upgrade will benefit Morgan and that his contributions will be better than before? If not, could those of you who believe this please explain why.

We now have...
Rielly Brodie
Muzzin Holl
take your pick of the rest, you know who they are.

Can anyone explain to me how this is not an improvement over what we've seen the past 10 years + We have two D pairings that are, at the very least, adequate. We've been asking for this for years. How can people be disappointed? And, still, we have time to make more adjustments to strengthen the D.

Good grief, we like to bitch and moan.

Hey Leafs fans.

I'm not gonna rehash what's likely been said about his playing ability cause I'm sure anything I have to say will have been already said already numerous times, but I just want to point out the type of person and teammate you're getting.

The first year of his 5 year contract in 2015-2016 was at $3.9M.

TJ Brodie - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

You're probably thinking, so what? Mark Giordano's salary was $4M that year and he deliberately structured it so that he wasn't making the same or more than his captain as a sign of respect.

I'm gonna miss seeing TJ in a Flames sweater.

Hmmm McCabe, Kaberle, Colaiacovo, White, Finger & Kubina!

As much as I shit on Dubas for his negotiations and the Kadri trade, we owe him the respect when he pulls off shit like this. Absolutely loved both signings. He's giving me some reason to believe in his "plan" 2 big steps in the right direction. Addressed our RD need and toughness with 2 signings. Obviously not done, but a good start to the off-season.

Yeah credit is given where credit is due 100%

It's pretty easy for us to all sit here and criticize things in hindsight . Or be critical even as they happen when we really have no idea what the picture really looks like.

Be critical where it's due as well, but no need to be blindly hateful

once you realize that some here would rather see Dubas fail than the Leafs do well things will start to make more sense.

Seems like the ideal type of defensive defenseman for the Leafs' system. Shuts down the opposition, but he can still skate and move the puck. My only worry is that at his age, a precipitous decline might begin, but even in that case, he will easily be the best partner that Rielly has ever had. Fantastic signing by Dubas in my opinion, makes a lot more sense than targeting Pietrangelo in our cap situation.

I rest my case.

Easily better then our current D

Rielly = McCabe
Brodie = Kaberle
Muzzin = Colaiacovo
White = Holl
Finger = Sandin/Liljegren
Kubina = Lehtonen

You could argue McCabe is qual or better then Rielly all around.
Kaberle again I would take over Brodie any day of the week, guy was one of the best passing defenders in the league with solid defense.
Muzzin and Colaiacovo are both pretty close in value and what they offer.
White and Holl same situation, that leaves us Finger & Kubina two solid players at the time over Sandin & Lehtonen....two guys that have no experience playing in the NHL.

You honestly believe that Brodie gets us past Columbus this year...Come on!
And switching out Simmonds for Clifford.

Of that, I have little doubt. My beef is the anger that is directed towards non linear development, as if that's a given. Early on we made great strides. Then it slowed down, for the team and the league's response. We coasted, they bolstered. Perhaps (I think so) we're now recognizing our shortcomings (which I didn't last year) and adjusting accordingly. It promises nothing, but I do see some value in addressing what became obvious shortcomings. It will be interesting to see how management moves forward. So far, I'm happy. As things move on, I'd be surprised if some do not change their opinion, but less surprised that some don't.

Too bad our players didn't do that.

Let’s at least wait until we are playing games on the ice to bitch and moan as well as praise it the best since sliced bread.

Truth is, we don’t know yet.
We needed a D desperately, good start and I hope we pull another one in as well.
Then build a hard to play 3rd line after that.
