If Gards is a top-30 dman according to this stat, and Oz was that much better than Gards, especially early on, does this mean that Oz was playing at a Norris level at the beginning of the season?

Everyone missed it....Oz was a scratch in the KHL last year.

requiring surgery !
Yes and people want to throw him (or Lily who hasn’t played a single NHL game) into the top 4 for 82 games with no backup in case of struggle/injury/whatever.

Priority is a top 4 RHD whatever you have to deal not named Matthews/Marner.

my biggest concern with Andersen has been his playoff performances and whether he can be good enough to win with when it counts. During the regular season he can be very reliable for a ton of games, but I think this year his play against Boston really sold me on him. At least through the first 6 games, he was spectacular and gave the Leafs a great shot at winning. Unfortunately they blew it, but hopefully he'll be able to tap into that next year for us
What do you think is with his game 7 performances? I can't really understand it.

Subconscious brain gets all the training in practice, builds muscle memory under low pressure. High pressure, you switch to conscious brain and suddenly forget how do a pivot the other side of your brain has practiced 100,000 times.

"Clutch" players are just better at staying loose and out of their own head in high pressure moments, they ride muscle memory. Andersen seems like a really introverted guy, I wouldn't be surprised if the bright lights knock him out of his groove more than most. Especially game 7s against a team that has your number where you choked last year.

Lmao no? There are a lot of good defensive defenseman that deserve recognition that aren't "Norris level".

The thing about Gardiner being a "top-30" defenseman is because he's top-15 by most offensive metrics and top-50 by most defensive. Oz might have had one better defensive season playing far easier minutes, but his offense is no where close.

I'm pretty optimistic about the Leafs options in house. Sandin and Liljegren both appear to have a very high potential. Rosen looks good. I like the looks of Hollowell in his early stages. I think Liljegren is better defensively than he is offensively, but I do think it is partially due to usage and age that his numbers aren't as high as the other two. If he was on what is a terrific first power play unit with Bracco which you could argue he should be, his stats would definitely increase significantly.

Duszak looks really intelligent and mobile as well. The Finnish defenseman they signed Teemu Kivihalme has an excellent scouting report.

The leafs suddenly have depth on the back end.

I still think they need some extra sandpaper aside from Muzzin but the loss of Gardiner, Hainsey and Dermott early on may not be as disastrous as people think.

With everyone healthy I still think they need another body in FA to fill out the roster and allow the young guys a bit more development time. I think they target a gritty option in FA to fill that spot. The young player Calgary just signed Yelesin may have been a good option and the Leafs were in on him. If the Leafs find some cap space Myers or Ristolainen may be good targets that can help with that aspect higher in the lineup.

It will be a good opportunity for someone like Sandin to show what he can do with Dermott out the first month.

1) Myers is no better than Jake Gardiner defensively.

2) We will have to trade Marner to acquire Ristolainen.

Myers is a more physical player and is more effective in the defensive end because of his reach. While having the ability to clear the zone at a similar level of effectiveness. He's not as productive offensively or at keeping the play in the offensive zone. He'd likely come in on a cheaper contract than Gardiner and he is a better fit as a right handed shot.

Do you mean we would have to clear cap from the trade of Marner to be able to fit Risto under the salary cap? Or it would cost Marner in trade? I think there are a couple workable trade options in the form of Nylander or AJ+Kap+. I do not think it would cost Marner in trade and I think there are other ways to make cap room, including it in the trade as one strong possibility.

Bad defensively is just untrue though. Based on isolated impact (RAPM.Def_xGA) he was actually the 2nd best defensively on our team (After Oz), and 45th ranked for defenseman that played over 500 minutes last sesason. This isn't just this season too, he's always been a positive defensive player (Unlike Rielly). Let's not kid ourselves, he will be missed; especially when his offensive isolated impact (RAPM.Off_xGF) in 9th ranked for defenseman that played over 500 minutes. We're just in a far better place than we've ever been to lose a top-30 defenseman in the entire league, but really Dubas should be trying his best to keep him (assuming he'll get back to full health).

I am fine with Gardner but I must say any measure that has Oz as our best defensive player is busted.

Rasmus Ristolainen is a future #1D for the Sabres. The Sabres view Ristolainen as highly as the Leafs view Rielly.

Ideally Muzzin and Lily are our shutdown pair.

Lily could learn so much from him on a daily basis and he already plays with a similar type of player on the PK as is. Loverde is obviously a million times worse than Muzzin but they can hopefully have the same impact on Liljegrens defensive game.
