All the same evaluations being rolled out that have beennrolled out 2 years ago. He is a different player by his own choice and coaches assisistance in the Ahl.

He's much better now. I want to just leave it at that on him. He has a chance to make the team out of camp because he is now mentally prepared to and is a better puck mover and skater than the competition he will have in camp.

He and Sandin could quite possibly make the team out of camp. If that just so happens to become a reality, we are a suddenly very very deep puck moving, transitioning, possession and fluid team that will be seeing the scoring threat that is the forward group bearing fruit on the defense.

Formidable contender if it shapes up that way this season!!!

Can't wait to see the kid play his first game but expect many Gardiner type gaffs, head scratchers and growing pains.

I think Lilly has a high ceiling and has all the tools to become a mid pair two-way defender. Right now, he's his own worst enemy and needs to simplify his game, quit trying to make the pretty plays or passes and just focus on cleaning up the mistakes.

I don't know why so many don't think he's got offensive capabilities. He's an underrated passer/player-maker and has a pretty hard/accurate shot. The points will come, especially playing with our high-octane offense.

Really his only weaknesses are his decision making and strength but at least he's willing to throw a hit and be physical when he needs to be. He's still so young and has great potential.

So if he makes the team this year, you're basically going to see a more physical version of a young Gardiner with a bit less offensive flash only because Gardiner could look like Niedermayer out there at times but could never sustain it.

Ceci, Barrie and Lilly as your right side is pretty damn bad defensively though..Possibly worst in the league in their own zone, so have fun Freddy..

If there's one thing that is certain, Keefe has shown consistently that he knows how to develop young players and prepare them for the NHL.
Instead of developing the defensive game in the NHL ala Rielly, Leafs management were smart enough to use their developmental team to develop the defensive game of one of their top prospects. Shocking.

Now there's a righty in the organization in Tyson Barrie that Liljegren can further learn from.

Couldn't Berg throw his weight around /provide the odd good hit?

NO, Berg was not a hitter at all. Positionally solid and did a good job with body position. That was the era where you could get away with the hack and slash and he did not possess the physical style and fell out favor with fans. He only averaged about 40 penalty minutes a season.

Lily has very good top end speed. He has not been using it effectively under Keefe last season as they concentrated on his defensive game. He was not used on the non-powerplay. His untapped skill to rush puck up ice has been thwarted. Yes he makes mistakes but if you remember so did Rielly for many years. His passing is ok but it is not his core strength. and the reason he is on his butt a lot in his own end is because he is still developing his man strength. It is not about his physique it is about his core strength development. He is a work in process and needs another solid year in AHL where they let him develop and play him on the PP. I have high hopes for him but he is not ready right now for NHL.

Its about time the Leafs let Lil be the number 1 dman on the Marlies. Let him play in all situations and force him to grow everywhere. If he fails so be it. But its time for us to see what this kid has. No more sheltering. PP, PK and lead team in minutes by D. Its time.
Yes yes yes I am truly hope Keefe unleashes him this year. I honestly think he was not given a fair sake last year.

You seem to be able to write but don't seem to be able to read. Seems like some Leaf haters on this site think he is bust. Gee, I know the Leafs are depending on him to be a starter in 2021. As someone attends Marlie games, he looks like an NHLer to me.
Thank you for communicating that you watch him at Marlies game. He needs the education;))

He wasn't sheltered last year and did really well. He was the best defenceman for the Marlies in the playoffs.
Now the production just needs to catch up.

I think there's so much bipolar opinion surrounding Liljegren because how green he was when he first arrived to the AHL. He was sort of a train-wreck at times in the beginning but it all seemed to stem from him missing so much time with the mono. Plus he was an 18 year old entering an NHL affiliate mens league.

People quickly formed their emotional judgement on him based on the first season and I don't think many realize how far he's come since then. They were too quick to write him off as a bust. I admit I wasn't sure about him either in the beginning but changed my mind when it was clear he was improving steadily.

Now that he's finally catching up we're starting to see the player we thought we were drafting. He's still only 20 and is only trending upwards.

I agree, another year of AHL to really push him to develop all aspects of his game to the fullest is the best path and build his confidence. Have him earn his promotion to the NHL and it appears he won't have an issue doing so as he pretty much did last season but was injured. Especially since we could really use him on the bottom pairing immediately.

I think the main reason that opinions were down on him, is that he was advertised as an offensively gifted D-man. People stared at stats, and he disappointed in that regard. People weren't paying attention to how well rounded the rest of his game was becoming. If he can stay healthy all season, I hope that he gets a chance to show more offense, and then I think he'll be a very good player for us in the future.

Lilly beat out Borgman, Loverde, and Rosen in terms of defenceman in the playoffs. The stats show he was terrific and the eye test as well. He was really unlucky to not get more points.

1 PP goal 1 PP assist last year. If Keefe played him on the 1st PP unit, and he got more than 20 seconds at end of PP, then his points would like entirely different. My guess he would track at 30 points in 43 games which is damn good. But 15 points in 43 games looks bad because of coaches utilization. If you watch him closely he has very good speed and he should be attacking more on the rush. But it looks like to me he was held back into a more defensive role. Lets hope Keefe plays him on PP#1 this season and he can fully develop his game.

I can't seem to recall, does Keefe run a 1D PP as well?
