Lily played really good last night. He was our best defense. A mistake free game and a really nice play on the OT winner. Big kudos there.
Rosen not so much. Rosen worries me. In faster tighter games he makes more gaffes then expected. I am hoping last 2 games are a 1 off but it gives me cause for concern.
Sandin is a boy playing with men in playoff hockey so it is a learning experience for him. But he does not look like anything close to what he did in the first 2 series. So when teams get faster a lot more of his passes are getting intercepted. He is not dominating like he did in series 1 and 2. But Keefe is sticking with him on ice time showing confidence.
This series is very very tight. Could go either way.

Sandin played well, except for the pizza he served up.

Liljegren looks like a physically mature man at 20. I'm guessing he's only going to get stronger, and if he's physically mature, and getting 1st. pairing minutes he can learn about the NHL game in the NHL.

Not sure if Sandin is that far along, although Kaberle didn't look like a beast ever.

Sandin = Kaberle
Kaberle is the closest comparible to Sandin IMO
There is one huge difference. Kaberle was a little timid going into the corners when he was going to get hit. Sandin has better edges and he can withstand big hits and hold onto puck. But yes they pass the puck and vision on ice very similar.

Liljegren's adjustment to the NHL is unknown, for me I have some concerns. I hope I am wrong, but his mental game is puzzling at times. If the LA Kings did indeed choose Durzi over Liljegren I can see why. Does Liljegren have alot of upside in my eyes? I dont think so. I think if Liljegren makes a career in the NHL, its by being a defense first defenseman who keeps it very simple and tries to avoid handing pucks to much in the mold of Ron Hainsey. Solid defensely, dont worry about offense. It appears, this is what Keefe has really tried to do with him in the second half and into the playoffs and its a smart move by Keefe and MLSE.

Fast forward 5 years. Lily is an established second pairing D for TML.

Some ex-LA scout comes out and explains they preferred Durzi to Lindgren.
Not Liljegren

The Toronto reporter/rumor starter comes back with "Damn, I should have asked you to spell that"

It does not matter. All that matters is his continued development.

I think it was true based on what one of LA's AHL scouts told me but hockey people often make big mistakes with kids. Did you watch the game last night? Lilly was our best defender. No one could argue it he played a mistake free game in playoffs and then made an outstanding play for the game winner in OT. That is definition for a defender.

Lilly looks like the defensively sound rhd we are looking for. If his offensive game translates at all.

He is our pesce already

I think Rosen and lily are our 3rd pair to start with dermott out. Eventually

Rielly xxxxx
muzzin. Zaitsev
Dermott Lilly.

Have to decide what to do with righjt side

I'd be quite fine to see him playing with Rielly.

Giordano can carry rookies why not the Leafs "Norris" calibre defender?

And Dermott isn't going to be ready anyway.

I think this will be key factor and will play a big roll this season. We haven't much money to spend on defenders, and they're not easy to get. If Liljegren can step up and play decently, it will be huge for us. That's a lot of pressure though.

In a few years...

Rielly - - Dermott
Sandin - Liljigren
I like this a lot! Would be even better if we could get Dermott signed long term cheap, and be able to add another RD to that top 4.

I do think Dermott plays the off-side well enough to handle that role in the future though.

What a terrible take. Liljegren is a tremendous prospect who had an injury snag this regular season but is now back to 100% and is the best defenceman in the Toronto Marlies today.

Liljegren can become more than that.

He’s already the best D on the Marlies, he should be allowed a chance to grow his offensive game by playing on the #1PP in the AHL for a whole season next year.

His offensive game is fine. Rosen and Sandin have handled the load on the PP this year because they aren't as good 5 on 5. He produced well 5 on 5.

We don't really need him on the PP at the NHL level either with Rielly on the first unit and Mcfarland will hopefully push for that unit to stay out for the majority of the 2 minutes.

He'll be a Leaf next year and is exactly the type of guy we need back there.

"physically mature" might be underselling it. That shoulder/trap development looks kind of ridiculous, and I say that as bodybuilding enthusiast/hobbyist.

To me it's more in the territory of "How are you even doing that, at your age, while training and playing pro hockey?"

To be honest though it's more important to see him willing and enthusiastic about throwing a few elbows in the corners. He can be a scary dude to barrel down on if he develops that killer instinct.
