On the contrary I think he'd be talked about as one of the biggest steals of his draft class if he wasn't a Leafs player. When it comes to anything Leafs there's only two opinions.
Leafs nation - Homer bias
Fans of all other 31 teams - Hate the leafs, anti-leafs bias
We saw the same thing happen with Kessel, Kadri, Hyman immediately after they left. They were torn to shreds by every non-leaf fan base when they were in Toronto, but as soon as they left they were considered elite players and everyone saw the talent they had, and we were told we are fools for letting them go.
When we had Kessel: "Soft, 1 dimensional, over rated, only puts up points because of toi"
When we had Kadri: "Over rated, inflated numbers because of the team he plays on, over rated defensively, liability in the playoffs"
When we had Hyman: "Carried by Matthews and Marner. Over rated Leaf who is a bottom 6 player on other teams, nothing more than a bottom 6 grinder"
You either love the Leafs or you hate the Leafs, there is no in between. Lily is a great young player and I'm glad we have him. For all the Leaf haters out there, we love the salt keep it coming.
