Like that main board thread… I’m convinced you don’t watch the games. Even if it’s against the worst competition, Morgan Rielly didn’t come in and play top pairing when he was drafted, defencemen take time, be patient. No one expects a top pairing defencemen, but if you don’t see the upside of a top 4, then you clearly aren’t watching

not even just that. Even If Rielly had been thrown to the wolves and thrust into a #1 role from the get go, that would be an indictment of where our D was at that point in time. Liljegren is being somewhat sheltered right now, yes, so is Sandin. The fact of the matter is that good teams do that. These two don’t have a lot of nhl experience yet, and we have 3 quality nhl vets in Rielly, Muzzin and Brodie ahead of them in the lineup, so why wouldn’t we shelter them a bit while they learn the ropes?

I have been clear about it from the beginning. The coach does not trust him to pay him against anybody but the worst players on the worst teams. True story, you can look that up. I'm not asking anybody to trust my opinion, I'm only asking that you look at things objectively. He does not look like a first round pick, probably should never have been a first round pick based on all the teams that ignored his ranking on draft day, and does not look capable at any point of living up to that. If he were a 6th round pick from 2017 he'd already be elsewhere getting his second chance, but here in Leafland we need to Garret Sparks it up and pretend that just a few more seasons and he'll figure it out. Meanwhile the team would like to win a game this year and cant afford this vanity project that Dubas has going in Liljegren. Sandin is wiping the ice with this guy, its obvious when you see the two play which one has a future and which one will be lining up for some KHL bottom feeder. How's his defence partner for a comparable? It isn't even close. No matter how much you hope, no matter how much you defend his inability to crack the roster, it won't change the fact that he isn't good enough now and doesn't look like he ever will be. What use is a timid defenceman who can skate a bit with the puck but has zero ability to retrieve it from the other team? He couldn't defend his way out of a wet paper bag and like I said, he's facing the worst lines from the worst teams whenever he is out there.

Your entire take is hilarious and beyond ignorant but I found this particularly funny "Also, the team would like to win a game this year and can't afford..."

We have a winning record with him in the lineup :)

Liljegren was great last night. He is much faster than Holl and has a better outlet pass to exit the zone quicker.

I really don’t see the need of subbing him out for Holl. His development is critical for the Leafs success in the present and the future.

Agreed! He's never going to develop playing a game here and there.

I wish Bogo didn't get turned off by Ontario's vax laws, keeping him and trading Holl could have been ideal. Too many guys who need minutes to be effective, need a more specialized skillset to play a physical 14 mins ES + PK.

I see a future great in this kid...I REALLY like him and therefore, I am prejudicial....Plus there is something really likeable about the guy...

Looks for sure, like a Viking...

I think Keefe needs to make a decision and let Liljegren know he's their man. The kid needs room to breathe and not wondering if the next mistake will put him back in the press box

Liljegren will make mistakes, he needs to, in order to learn and get better

The only decision that has to be made is playing him consistently.. it doesn't mean Holl goes away completely. Too early for that.. but maybe next off-season.

Exactly. Not sure why the only option for a player who is beaten out of a position is to trade them. For now, they can just switch positions.

#1 NHL rule. You never, ever trade away defensive depth for cap space.

If he was capable of providing extremely good anything he would already have a steady NHL job. Swing and a miss. There's a reason he gets spot duty against the least threatening teams when they play their least threatening lines and is glued to the press box when it matters. He is the Michael Hutchinson of our defence but we spent a first round pick on him so nobody wants to admit it yet. It must be Keefe's fault he isn't Lidstrom yet of course!
The most ironic part of this post is the fact that Lindstrom didn't become an NHL player until he was 22. The same age Liljegren is now. Lidstrom wasn't some superstar prospect. He was skipped over in his first year of eligibility. He was never expected to be 1 of the best ever. He developed into that.

“Amazing, Great” again a bit of stretch, but he looked like an NHLer. He’s a bottom pairing guy. But they should probably play him more or give him more consistent games.

I will get borjes opinion on lilly but you know what, nhl players are more careful about what they say, that this forum allows u to say...

If i ask borje about liljegren he might masterfully start talking about downhill skiing in norway

NHL players, are terrified about speaking out about anything left field

me, i think liljegren is a player, a real gud pro..l

Indeed.

Serviceable is the word people should use. He might be "amazing/great" in comparison to Holl who is straight trash.

Everybody with half a brain knew we needed another Bogo type in the offseason.
