That was a solid debut for Timothy Liljegren in 14:52 of ice time. He’s a subtle player and doesn’t do anything flashy, but he just makes solid plays.
There was one play in the second where the Senators were buzzing in the Leafs’ zone and Liljegren got the puck on a d-to-d pass below the goal line but didn’t have anyone open for a breakout pass. It was the second period, so flipping the puck out does little because you can’t go for a line change there. It was a small play, but all Liljegren did was squeeze against the wall with the puck to take contact from a forechecker, push through it, and break the puck out cleanly. It’s a little play, but he’s trying to break out with possession, and if it doesn’t work, he made it a relatively low-risk turnover given the circumstances.
Later in the game, he had one particularly rough shift where he was outmuscled for the puck in the defensive zone and a puck went off of his skate for a 2v1, but that’s part of the learning process for young defensemen. He needs game reps to work through that stuff. To the coaching staff’s credit, they actually gave him more shifts after that one.

An analysis on his debut from Anthony on the Leafs Hot stove.

Carlo makes 1st Up impossible to listen to. Can’t stand him.

Since Landsberg left I’ve stopped listening to the show and went back to 590.

Carlo doesn’t belong on the radio talking anything about hockey and I’m sick to death of listening to him talk about his golf bragging.

Shut up already. Is there anything that the guy is not a narcissistic hack at???

People have said sportsnet radio is bad but I think TSN is worse. I listen to sportsnet morning show for my drive to work. On the way home I’ve stopped listening to over drive and giving Kyper and Bourne the chance for a bit.

Carlo digging himself a bigger hole.
Says Leafs are in trouble if TL is their 7th D. Then says he meant the depth after him. Thats not the same thing. He messed up his clarification as well.
Ofcourse the worst part was he starting taking shots at Gordon's career.

Keep Holl out of lineup and we will be fine .. like I said Lily with Muzzy and things will look much better which occurred .. da facts are exactly what I said

thats cool, dermott or holl can be our 7th defenseman, he should feel better then lol.

He's not a better shooter than Sandin and not a better skater than Dermott, but otherwise his overall package is something that any winning team would want in their top 6 on the blueline.
is this another way of saying he has a better shot than Dermott and is a better skater than Sandin?

Who's Gordon Bombay?

He was a talented hockey player during his childhood. For six years, Gordon played for the Hawks pee-wee hockey team led by Coach Jack Reilly. During the 1973 state championship game, he blew a penalty shot costing the title for the team and ending their undefeated winning streak.

Gordon was a superior puck handler and scorer. While smaller in stature compared to most players, he is a very proficient and fast skater, which helps make-up for the size difference between him and opposing defenders.

After being arrested for drunk driving, Bombay is sentenced to 500 hours of community service by coaching the local district 5 hockey team. He led them to a championship.

Having a dman as good and talented as Lilly as your 7th dman is a rarity and a luxury in this league.

Every other team gets praised for having young 1st round talent come up and contribute - only the leafs get criticized for it andnhave it portrayed as a weakness.

Liljegren looked worse than Holl. He looked lost for much of his first game.
I thought he was fine. Turned the wrong way once and got burned but no harm done.
He's a big time upgrade on Holl. He's always been in over his head.

Stick with facts
Holl in against Sens 1st game and causes 3 goals against in a loss and goes -3 in game
Lily comes in against Sens 2nd game 2 days later and gets 1 assist and goes +0 in game
No one in their right mind could come to your conclusion even if they did not know a thing about hockey
Only a fanboy could think Holl was better OMG that take is a pure LOL

Holl is solid defender. Muzzin has looked slow and isn't up to speed yet but dont think Holl is the problem. Especially when you realize hes out there mostly to defend and kill penalties. Just because Liljegren is young and a prospect doesnt make him better. People have shiny new toy complex.

How do you credit Holl with any of those goals. 3 bad bounces and one was kicked in. What agenda do you have?

If we have to rely on liljegren as a top 4 d man we are in trouble. Just all over the ice in terms of coverage he needs to be worked in slowly hence why Keefe doesn't trust him.

He may need to check out some depth charts of other NHL teams. Having Liljegren as a #7 is definitely one of the best in the league, he is better than some roster players for other teams.

I have seen both guys up close and personal on ice at various Leaf/Marlie camps over da years .. Holl kinda a bit like Gards (without being scared) where he is all over ice and does not play a proper defense .. no one really knows where he will be or what he will do .. but he does have skills .. but he lacks proper defender training and will never be a solid pro defender

Sens games one goal was a puck giveaway, one he completely screened our tender where tender could not see puck at all and other one was him being in completely in wrong position on ice .. Muzzy is very very good but there is only so much you can cover up
