I'm also moving back to NJ and will be working out of JC. I think the answer depends on price range and where you draw the line on what an insane commute is. The areas I'm looking at are generally 75-90 mins each way, but for the foreseeable future my group is not getting forced back into the office.

Having grown up there I'd recommend Fair Lawn. Good school system and I think it'd only be about an hour commute to JC via train.

We've been searching for a house to buy since about February. The market has cooled down in that you no longer have to outbid over a dozen people and waive all contingencies, but everything is still going for inflated asking prices and doesn't sit for all that long.

Ya, that's what I'm worried about with the housing search. Even up here it's nuts. My neighbors recently moved and their house went for $30 K over asking with a totally clean offer, everything waived and no contingencies. I want no part of that, but may have no choice.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Wife is back in the hospital but at least now we know what we’re dealing with, have a treatment plan, and will likely be home in a couple of days. I feel guilty for not seeing a bunch of smaller things as a coming storm for another trip, but it is what it is.
Hang in there and be positive. I don’t doubt you are her rock from the way you’ve described this before.

Northern NJ was insane before the rate hikes. The last offer we put on a house was back in late March, we offered 40k over and were up against like 2 dozen other bids. The house went 124k over asking. Since then I've just been waiting it out and letting things return to normal.

I wish I knew how many hours I have spent at the Empress Diner in Fairlawn. I bet it's in the 1000's

Was always a bigger fan of Land and Sea, but Empress is good too. Drink at the Dutch House until closing, walk over to L&S for late night drunk food.

one more to the journey down the road

I saw them in college. It was interesting. They were never my cup of tea. I found thst
They were basically two bands. The first was Perry and some of thr guys who were happy to do the Journey syrupy ballad thing. Then there was the guitarist Schoen and his version of thr group that clearly wanted to play harder stuff. At one point he got to lead thr band in a jam and they played Zeppelin for a minute.

Good news: wife returned from the hospital on Thursday. It looks like an infection caught early enough.

Bad news: our bedroom AC isn't working. I hope we don't have to buy a new one, but hopefully PC Richard has a Labor Day clearance if we do.

Happy to hear the positive news about your wife!

We balled out and replaced our two old ACs with two of these bad boys and they rule: 8,000 BTU U-shaped Air Conditioner

By the way, Mango's wife posted IG stories of the family (both of them plus their dog) in New Jersey after spending the summer in Miami. The time is near.
After being in Florida for 11 years now, I don't understand why anyone would want to spend the summer here, unless maybe they live in the Southern Hemisphere, where it's the winter during our summer. Or if they lived in some place like Alaska where it's cold year round and they'll take the opportunity to get away any time of the year they could.

I would do the snowbird thing if money/work weren't a question. I LOVE it here for pretty much 8-9 months out of the year, but it's way too humid in the summer.

I look at the weather and temperatures every day up home in Jersey and there's quite a few days in the summer where the actual temperature is the same or even higher than it is here, but you can bet that it's much more comfortable (even if it's uncomfortable for the people who live there and deal with it every day) and tolerable up there than it is down here.

October-December and March-April are absolutely amazing down here. Though some of January-February have cold spells and cold fronts, especially chilly temps at night. It don't get as cold in Miami in January-February though. May-September are just disgustingly humid. I can't walk to my car without breaking a sweat this time of year, whereas up there I usually can.

I know a lot of the Russians (Kovalchuk, Ovechkin, Ponikarovsky) had summer homes in the Miami area and maybe they still do. Patrik Elias mentioned on the spittin chiclets podcast that he was on fairly recently that they have a place in Florida and I remember Marty had a place in Florida at one point (maybe he still does) and naturally with hockey season and the time of the year it happens, they can only spend time here in the summer and maybe the all star break/bye week in the winter.

But if it were up to me and I had the money, I'd be in Jersey from the middle of May through either the middle or end of September. And then I'd be here the remainder of the year.
