With the Leafs, the story was that Shanahan was blocking him from making the moves that needed to be made. He needed to be in "full control" to really unleash his hockey exec awesomeness.

I have never seen a credible source that claims Shanahan is involved in personnel moves.

Plenty of Leaf fans started to make this claim at the end of the Dubas era, and they continue to make this claim now, about Tre, but there's still no evidence at all.

This is just the natural life cycle of a franchise. They’ve been mortgaging the future for a wonderful present for a long time. Nothing wrong with that as you’ve gotta take your shot when you were blessed with Letang, Fleury, Crosby, Malkin etc. They made the most of it. Now their good players have moved on or are aging. The Karlsson deal was stupid as he just added what they already had in abundance. Live and learn, Dubas. Anyway this was the last hurrah and the choice now is whether or not to tear it down or let the legends age out as lifelong Penguins. That will depend, most likely, on what the big guys want to do. You aren’t trading Crosby if he wants to stay a Penguin for life. It is what it is. Glory never dies, and this team was glorious.

It is honestly a shame that the Penguins are committing to blowing up their team before even trying to replace the coach. And by "a shame" I mean "absolutely mentally deranged".

Are there any other comparable situations like this? A team that's seemingly underperforming the sum of its parts, but instead of replacing the coach, they just decide to rebuild? It's downright bizarre.
No. Their are no comparable.
Sullivan and the entire ownership and last two GM have been in unknown water for sometime. As
1. No coach in the history of the game has lost 5 consecutive play off series and kept his job.
2. Then Sullivan's follows up those 5 consecutive play off series losses with back to back missing the play offs.
3. This guy is protected like nobody ever seen in pro sports.

Natural life cycle of a championship team......but not of a coach.
If it was Sutter would still be coaching LA. Babs would still be in Detroit. Quenville and Julien would still be coaching Hawks and Bruins. Trotts would be in Washinton and Berube would be in StLouis.
But they have all been fired in the natural life cycke of championship team.
Sullivan? He gets extended while GMs , forwards, defenseman, goalies all get shown the exit door season after season. ha!

Natural life cycle of a championship team.......buy not so Natural life cycle of a coach.
Guy should have been canned when they lost the the 24th place Habs in "the play in" Or the next season, or the next season, or the season after that , of the one after that ....or this laugher of a season
1. Barry Trotz did, took me a whole 5 seconds to think of that. So much for "never."

The problem is ownership groups want the playoff revenue and don't seem to want to recognize reality. Calgary's ownership group is just as bad. The team is expected to make the playoffs even when they're rebuilding. Two contrary things that cant always happen at the same time. And even then staff are discouraged from using words like 'rebuild'. It's insane.

While I'd like to feel sorry for Dubas he did sign up for this mess. He wanted to walk the tight rope, walk and chew gum at the same time.

Yeah, but does he want to close out his career on a team in the middle of a tear down (which is coming whether ownership and fans want it or not)?

Imagine him finishing his career as a Leaf or a Hab.

Don't think he will leave Pens.

Certainly hope he does

Aves or Bruins would be my guess if the did decode to go.

OK - let's go with Bruins, Habs, or Leafs. He is an eastern Canadian boy after all and should have a say in where he goes as he has a no-move and all.

Edit: Given one of his buddies leads the Avs you're right - that would be a good add too.

Agreed. Never heard that until the end of Dubas in Toronto during his exit plan.
-Shanny certainly didn't pick Sheldon Keefe as coach.
-Shanny probably never heard of Bunting until Dubas brought him in.
-Sparks won a championship in the AHL with Dubas. Kyle thought he was gonna be leafs number one and brought him up.
•Dubas was front and center during Tavares signing and wallowing in the credit.
•Extended Marner , brought in goalie after goalie every summer.
• Re Signed Nylander , Matthews, Rielly.
Traded for Thorton, Foligno, Muzzin, Brodie, O'Rielly, etc etc etc
Where exactly was Shanny getting in Dubas way??

Penguins: *now about to enter another phase of of total irrelevancy where they probably won’t be featured in anything, or even maybe any good ever again*

HFBoards: *Makes thread about Penguins that won’t leave the main page*

I mean hey, the Pens got 3 Cups out of the Crosby era. Most franchises would kill for just one.
For anyone who wants the Pens to rebuild now, are you also comfortable seeing Sid in another uniform to finish out his career, ala Brady going from NE to TB?
If Sid wants to play til he's 40 (2 more years after his contract expires in 2025), does he want to remain in Pitt and still hover in the 8-12th spot in the East? Or does he want to take another run at a Cup? That's something he will have to decide in the off-season. He is still playing very well for his age. Comes down to what he wants.

Kind of a tough decision on the pick. The odds are they are worse next year. Especially if they decided to deal Crosby which could even happen at the draft as opposed to the deadline.

I did not realize he has been in Pitt this long with that poor of a record. What a waste of late career Crosby.
