6-2-2 and not firing on all Cylinders and not playing their best
Here is where I disagree a bit:
1. This is Kreider's BEST. What we are seeing. He never has, and probably can't do better. It isn't even that awful. It's peak CK.
2. Igor and Fox can't be expected to be even better than they are now.
3. It either goes in for Zib or it doesn't - and when they start to fall in, doesn't mean his game will be changed all that much
4. There is no evidence that Laf/Kakko/Blais/Chytil/Miller ARE or CAN BE better than they are right now. Doesn't mean they won't, just saying that "not playing their best" may not be true.
5. Ryan Strome
6. Trouba looks like his Winnipeg self, ie "his best"
7. Goodrow isn't getting any better. And his role as a closer has been successful
8. 4th line looks better than past years

So, in terms of "not playing their best" we have Panarin.

So they are 6-2-2, 10 games in. Their best is probably around true .500 (not NHL .500). It will even itself out. Playoffs are still a possibility but not even close to a guarantee until we know what we have with number 4 on my list. Panarin aside, it is very likely THIS IS THEIR BEST. Will it be enough to make the playoffs in the Metro? That is the question.

Its been 10 games. 6-2-2. Only 10 games in.

Couldnt at least wait until the 21 game mark to start bitching? I guess the calendar turning to November was the green light.

Am I frustrated by certain things? Yeah. Chytil comes to mind. I will never like Strome for justified reasons. Miller has potential but always finds ways to do braindead things on the ice like in OT. Laf and Kakko do need to start producing more and I expect the lines to be changed up. I dont see Gallant riding this forever, I think he is letting the guys who have been here and like playing with certain players, ride itself out. Gallant is a proven coach who has been to a SCF, he gets the benefit of the doubt…ESPECIALLY WHEN IT HAS BEEN 10 games.

The fact remains this thread is a f***ing joke. Not only has it been only 10 games, but its even more laughable this thread was created towards the end of a 2nd period when the team was up 2-0 with their star players contributing. I am sure the OP was smiling ear to ear when this team blew the lead, thats the type of fans we have.

Someone lock this thread and throw away the key. Let the posters complain in the Roster Building Threads

the record is good so far
it's the persistent and obvious problem of stifled producing that is concerning

The Drury moves, especially trading Buch, involved making space on the top 6 for Laf & Kakko. Unless they start producing, and agree no evidence that they will, the Rangers will not be elite. Everything else seems fine Goodrow is what he is - a decent bottom 6 forward; he's not good enough to move up. The defense seems fine, Fox/Lindgren excellent, Trouba playing well and Miller improving, and the 3rd pair should get better as the season progresses. Igor is awesome; Georgi a good back up. The 4th line is good. Chytil and Blais may or may not be truly effective but they should at least be serviceable on a 3rd line.

So its time for Laf & Kakko to contribute or the season will be a disappointment. Yes our record is good but we have been outplayed most games and haven't seen the best competition yet. So the record is not sustainable based on the current level of play.

Points in 8 of the first 10 games, mostly on the road. And they haven't hit their stride yet. Will they hit their stride? I don't know--but there are much worse places to be early in the season.

I'm keeping my eye on Laf, Kakko and Chytil. The team absolutely needs them to take the next step--Panarin, Zibanejad, Kreider, and Strome will be fine. The problem? I'm not sure. I get the sense that the club coddles the young forwards a bit and doesn't demand offensive excellence from them. "Learn how to play defense, the rest will come naturally," etc.

It's hard to complain with the results thus far especially considering we haven't really set up shop at home yet. My only worry right now is our reliance on Igor. One bad slump or god forbid injury and we are royally screwed.

This thread is laughable. You know who's a "bad hockey team"??? The Coyotes are a bad hockey team....the BlackHawks are a bad hockey team.....the Canadiens are a bad hockey team.....the Kraken are a bad hockey team....

This team is underwhelming.....but it a team that gets results. Yes, everyone would love to see Laf, Kakko, and the rest of the offensive talent get going more. If you believe that their talent hasn't gone bad, then there is certainly reason to believe they will pick it up. This isn't the Sabres of last year....who started on fire, just to flop considerably because they were devoid of talent.

And from a defensive standpoint....while Shesty has been lights out, the overall defense hasnt been terrible (yes, they have their moments). Good teams are solid defensively....and this team is solid defensively.

So come off the ledge, and stop crying about Laf not being so visible or Kakko not having any points. This team is far from a bad hockey team, no matter how hyperbolic you wanna be.

Winning games without playing consistently good hockey yet. Winning games without our stars playing their best. Winning games despite our best prospects not taking a major step forward.

This should be an optimism thread. Our goalie is great, and this team should be deadly when they're firing on all cylinders. At the same time, they're not putting themselves behind the eight ball with a crappy record to start the season.

I'm waiting to see the team after things stabilize. The schedule has been torturous for us. We're constantly on the road and not practicing.

The test for me is at the end of November. @ NYI on the 24th, @BOS 26th and NYI again on the 28th.

It hinges on Gallant. Can he be the anti-Quinn, or will he go down the same path as Quinn to oblivion? Some have already said that the superstars are tuning him out and doing their own thing.

This team is currently suffering from systems issues and the Tinordi/Nemeth effect.

They are playing John Tortorella hockey right now. And this team simply isn't built for it, no matter how many Reaves and Goodrows you try to add. Their forecheck is atrocious.

The amount of times they went high and hard off the glass out of their own end last night was painful to watch. This is 100% a coaching staff systems thing. You have Adam Fox on the back end and Igor in net. Open it the f*** up, GG. Kak and Laf are never going to bang the body and retrieve pucks. The only time we should be flinging pucks into the neutral zone is if there's absolutely no other play to be made. We're doing it as a strategy

And the stretch pass/red line tip play has got to stop. Carry the f***ing puck in the zone. It was so bad yesterday that the person I was watching hockey with that just started watching this year was like "why the hell do they keep doing that play if they can never retrieve the puck?" It's painfully obvious. GG is trying to play Torts era hockey with a group of offensive minded rookies and finesse players.

Teams never gonna go anywhere if he doesn't open up the systems

I disagree with the original post. I think they are fortunate to be above water considering there's a new coach and they've played a lot of road games. This is not a bad team. There IS a lot of talent that hasn't getten started yet.

yes. Like Jones, Barron, Kravtsov, etc. Lot of talent

Agreed, they are talented and thus should be on the roster, especially over lumps like Tinordi and McKegg. It's not 2007.

GG has specifically said he doesn't want pucks flipped out into the neutral zone. We just need more puck support in the d zone. How many times did we have to watch Fox hang on to the puck and get everyone to come back to breakout again. Forwards want no part to do with helping their defensemen in the breakout. They just expect to be found cheating for offense all the time.

Love what Drury's done to the team, but does anybody else hope we can hit up Tampa and maybe pick up a guy like Bellemare or even Perry for some veteran presence? This would allow us to run hopefully 3 4th lines, so that our big guns can get even less favorable match ups.

Yes I'm sure Tampa is looking to sell off pieces.

While I do not think this is a "bad" hockey team, they look like they have all the signs of potentially falling off a cliff. I just don't see the offense currently being up to it and Shesty can't be a %950+ every game. As it stands it doesn't feel like the Rangers are beating as many teams as they are surviving.

No one should be hitting the panic button but most of the top 9 don't look like they are where they need to be. We can revisit this thread at the 20-25 game mark and start to panic.
