My call on Hayes is that he’s cooked. He never was the fastest guy on the ice and the injuries have taken their toll. Tortorella’s assessment that he no longer can handle center ice is correct. Since Hayes doesn’t care to play wing, there’s a problem.
Now it’s St. Louis’ mess now not the Flyers. It’s going to be more of the downhill decline for Hayes. JMO but the talking heads who feel that Briere got fleeced on this deal are going to be eating crow over the next three seasons.

Injuries are always a concern, but usually players that don't rely on speed or athleticism age fairly well.
I think he has a few more good years in him. And at a $3.5m cap hit the risk for the Blues is pretty low.

I think Hayes will be fine if you treat him as a veteran offense first 3C who has to be sheltered.
Now reason Flyers had to retain 50% is those kind of guys can be bought in FA for 3x3 deals or so, if you pay more, you'll get burnt.
Problem for St Louis is Schenn is becoming the exact same guy.
