Your comment about their understanding of "culture" was just strange. I responded that I'd be willing to bet a lot of posters here are more well travelled than players. I'm not sure what you're missing here.
These dudes eat, shit, sleep, work, travel and live with people from all parts of the world for most of each year. Not many sports let alone posters on this board are exposed to as much culture as NHL players are. It's not strange at all. It's a fact.

And all that aside, my point was about knowing about living in Canada, you brought up the "traveled" stuff.

Ignore the double Petterssons, but thats Team America who opted to extend or sign there.

It seems like everyone has known this forever...

I was born in Canada and spent my entire young life there but even I understand. I would definitely have Vancouver on my list, along with most likely Toronto and Montreal, but there's no way I'd be actively seeking to play/live in Edmonton or Winnipeg. And with how bad everything is with the cost of living, taxes, politics, etc., I can see why a lot of Americans specifically don't want to go north of the border.

I question how well known some of these athletes are without their equipment in Canadian cities. I still recall being in Urban Fair in downtown Vancouver and seeing Daniel Sedin shopping and nobody other than me noticing or paying attention. At least in bigger cities, I don't think it's really that much of a problem for these athletes.
It's more the media attention, players go about their days pretty easily in Vancouver. But if they want to be important, they can play that card anywhere they want.

Zero surprise for me. I’m Canadian and have lived in 3 different major cities (Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg), and travelled all over the country. If I had the choice, the only Canadian city I’d ever actually want to live in is Vancouver. Especially if I had NHL money and didn’t have to worry about the cost of living.
I'd prefer to live in Canada.
I lived in LA for 2 years.

It's literally the anus of the planet. Smoggy shit-hole. Homeless people everywhere with psychosis.

Places like Seattle, you get this nonsense:

(If you want more context about what the locals think about this video, read the comments. They're sick of all of this, and how the politicians protect and insulate them. Even if they murder you.

I love visiting the states? but living there? No thanks.

Go ahead and live in a place where crazies chase you with axes.
I'd rather raise my kids in Canada.

There's a reason a lot of NHL players have massive mansions in Kelowna n shit.

Check out Mario Lemieux's off-season home in Tremblant Quebec:

I'm curious, are you talking about LA or Hamilton?

I'm talking about NTC clauses, not favorite road cities. Montreal is a favorite road city. It's also one of the top NTC cities.

And you're basing that BS claim on what, exactly?

Off of answers directly from the players and the teams that were most common on NTC lists in 2023. It's factual and facts don't care about feelings.

I'm sorry I can't take anything here seriously when you imply the politics in Canada are worse than the shit show that is US politics.

I wish Campbell had stayed away
Yeah, I think Derek Ryan is the only American playing day to day for Edmonton. Everybody else CDN, German (Drai), Ekholm (Swede)

They are all handcuffed, but Vancouver is less handcuffed. Probaby Toronto too. They are close to the US

Weather comes into play, but I think a lot of it has to do with pressure, A lot of these guys grew up in Canada or some cold cities overseas.

I think most players would rather play where nobody gives a f*** who they are and in a lot of cases cannot even be recognized. Make a lot of $$. Relax, etc. Most players are not mentally built to play in a Canadian market.

There was a rumour recently posted on HF Oilers and apparently Parayko would only waive for the Oilers. I think this is over blown. Each to their own and I am sure some players just don't like the media focus they get in Canada. Weather can also factor in altho I wouldn't want to be in some of the southern states during the summer. Also with a salary cap team can only sign so many stars before they have to start filling at their rosters.
Isn;t he from Fort Mac or played there? If true, that is why. He is familiar with the area.

Hell, he ended up sucking, but Washingtons goalie (Holtby) said no to his home (Alberta) and chose Vancouver. Said it would be a distraction playing in Edmonton. Too much family around. I can see that. Asking for tickets. Always wanting to bug him about his play, etc lol

Hope these fans were children. Imagine being an adult and waiting outside of a public toilet for another adult to finish his job, just because you want his signature on a card or something, yikes.
I find it cringe doing that even outside of a hotel or bus as an adult. I have been around hockey players through businesses, but I never asked them for an autograph lol. I love Wayne Gretzky and was walking beside him crossing the street at Rogers Place and didn't ask him. Just a quick hi.

I was at dinner with my wife on vacation and 2 tables down from Michael Jordan. She kept telling me to go up to him. I told her f*** that and don't mention it again lol.

Oilers are doing great, and then you have Winnipeg and Vancouver too. Exciting times for Canada, I think one of these teams will return the Cup to Canada, and honestly I’m here for it
The only reason the Oilers would be able to attract people right now is b/c they are contenders and I bet even that doesn't help 100%

I do not see Vancouver having this problem. They are close to the US and Van is one of the nicest cities in the world. I am talking actual proper Vancouver/West Van. etc. Not the suburbs, even though it's still nice. Look how many Americans they have ont he roster. I don't see guys wanting out like Tkachuk.

For rich guys, Van should be a prime place. Torts didn't even live there for some reason. Found that weird. For regular folk, over 90% of would not be able to afford it unless you want to rent your whole life or buy a 1 million dollar townhome. For regular folk, extended family/friends come more into play. Toronto is also like that too.

I’m from Georgia. If I had the money I would 100000% love to visit the Seattle/Vancouver area. Hockey games included. Especially VAN as as I’d love to see a Canadian city/team

It's not as big an issue as It's made out to be.

When has Toronto. Montreal or Vancouver ever had a problem attracting or keeping players? They don't it doesn't happen.

Winnipeg would you think would have an issue with it because as much as I love that city It's more of a raise a family type place, not exactly the best spot if you are a single multi millionaire though.

Yet They still kept their #1 goalie, #1 center AND just got Monahan.

Edmonton used to have those issues but those issues stopped years.

Calgary literally just had a player who had it in his contract that he could not be traded to Calgary waive that same clause to go to Calgary.

Speaking of Calgary Nazem Kadri blocked a trade to Calgary, TJ Brodie added Toronto to his NTC when that trade got blocked.

Where are they now? Calgary and Toronto.

Ottawa is having those issues, do you why? Because Ottawa sucks and has sucked for years and there are NO signs they are coming out of it and even they got Claude Giroux.

It's not a Canada issue, It's an Ottawa and possibly Calgary issue,.

If you don't suck to the point where you have no hope you don't have issues keeping or attracting players.

Ottawa is the only real one with this issue.

Correct me if I’m wrong but hasn’t a Canadian team (Vancouver) made half of all the nhl level trades in the whole league this year? Seems like players will go to cities regardless of which side of the border.
